Philadelphia, Pa. (March 20, 2010)--The Mount St.
Mary's baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Penn on
Saturday. The Mount dropped the opening game, 2-1, before falling
4-2 in the second half of the twinbill. The Mount falls to 4-9 on
the year with the loss.
In the opening game, Penn rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom
of the seventh inning to earn the 2-1 victory. The Mount took the
lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Mark Quaranta
walked to open the frame. Sam Nott pinch ran and moved to second
on a sacrifice bunt by Tom Healy. Zach Helman followed with an RBI
single to give the Mount the lead.
Starter Vincent Molesky had another strong start, not allowing a
run in 5.2 innings of work while striking out six with no walks.
Penn, however, rallied in the bottom of the seventh off Mount
closer Mike Matta. Mike Mariano led off the frame with a walk and
pinch hitter Steve Gable was hit by a pitch while attempting to
bunt to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Pinch hitter Adrian Lorenzo came in to bunt, but when the count got
to 1-2, he laced an RBI single to plate the tying run. After an
intentional walk, Penn's Tom Grandieri grounded to the ball to
first base. The throw was off the mark, allowing the game-winning
run to score.
In the nightcap, Penn (5-5) took a 3-1 lead, held off a Mount rally
in the seventh, and scored an insurance run in the eighth for a 4-2
victory.
After Penn scored in the bottom of the first off Mount starter Kent
Worthington, Tommy Flynn posted an RBI single in the third to even
the score for the Mount.
Penn added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by James Marz. Two
innings later, William Gordon drove home Grandieri with a base hit
to center for a 3-1 lead.
The Mount rallied in the seventh inning when Shane Eyler singled
and Quaranta walked to put runners on first and second with no
outs. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners over, Michael
Foster came through with an infield single to cut the deficit to
3-2. Penn, however, got out of the jam with a double play.
Penn added an insurance run in the eighth before the Mount again
rallied in the ninth. Andrew Caron and Quaranta each walked to
open the top of the ninth inning. Trey Jennings, however, got out
of the jam with a force out and a pair of strikeouts.
The two teams complete the four-game set with a doubleheader
tomorrow.
