Norfolk, Va. (March 2, 2010)--
Mount St. Mary's rallied but came up short, falling to Old
Dominion, 9-8, on Tuesday afternoon. The Mount scored three times
in the ninth and had the bases loaded with one out, but Old
Dominion was able to escape the jam with a game-ending
double-play.
Trailing 9-5 heading into the top of the ninth inning, the Mount
rallied. Zach Helman doubled to open the frame and moved to third
on a Jacob Darr base hit. Kyle Kane then laced a double to
right-center field to plate both runners and cut the deficit to
9-7.
Old Dominion's Adam Wisniewski entered in relief and got a
strikeout, but Josh Winter followed with a single to put runners on
first and third with one out. Andrew Caron followed with a
base-hit up the middle to cut the deficit to 9-8. Sam Nott was
then hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out. Wisniewski,
however, got Michael Foster to hit into a 4-6-3 double-play to end
the game.
Darr paced the Mount with four hits and two runs scored in the
game while Kane was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Helman added a 2-for-5
day with three runs scored in the loss while leadoff hitter Tommy
Flynn added a pair of hits.
Nathan Hartman was 4-for-5 to pace Old Dominion in the win while
Chris Baker had a pair of hits.
The Mount (1-3) took the early lead when Flynn and Darr singled
in the top of the first with Flynn scoring on a Kane groundout.
Old Dominion (5-4) took the lead with three runs (one earned) in
the bottom of the second, but the Mount scored twice in the fourth
to tie the score at 3-3. Winter had an RBI fielder's choice and
Tom Healy a sacrifice fly in the frame.
Shane Eyler's sacrifice fly in the fifth gave the Mount a
one-run lead, but Hartman had an RBI triple and Cameron Scott a
run-producing double in the bottom of the inning to give ODU the
lead back.
The Mount tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth, but
Old Dominion scored once in the sixth, twice in the seventh, and
once in the eighth to take a 9-5 lead.
Mount starter Buddy Fields allowed three runs (one earned) in
3.2 innings of work. Fields struck out six, but walked five in the
game. Costa Kapothanasis took the loss, allowing six runs in 3.2
innings of relief. Karl Lamont added two-thirds innings of
scoreless relief.
The teams will conclude the two-game series tomorrow at 3:00
p.m.
