Towson, Md. (March 17, 2010)-Towson defeated
Mount St. Mary's, 12-3, in a non-conference baseball matchup at
Schuerholz Park in Towson on Wednesday afternoon. The Mount took
an early 1-0 lead, but Towson scored 11 unanswered runs to take
control of the game and earn the victory.
Mount St. Mary's (4-6) grabbed the early lead with a run in the
top of the third inning. Mike Matta singled and advanced to
second on a Jacob Darr walk. Cleanup hitter Kyle Kane followed
with an RBI single to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage.
The Tigers (2-14) broke the game open with three runs in the
bottom of the fourth and six more in the bottom of the fifth
inning. Towson greeted reliever Brady Feigl (1-3) with four
consecutive hits to take the lead. Kevin Collins, Steve Yarsinski
and Austin Harclerode each singled to lead off the fourth with the
last hit plating Collins with the tying run. Nick Natoli followed
with a two-run double to give Towosn the 3-1 lead.
Towson scored six more times, all coming with two outs, in the
fifth inning to take control of the game. Harclerode had an RBI
double and Natoli a two-run single in the inning.
Chris Wychock had a two-run triple in the sixth for Towson
before the Mount's Darr doubled home Matta in the top of the
seventh to make the score 11-2. After a Towson run in the bottom
of the inning, the Mount rounded out the scoring in the ninth when
Alex Andrews doubled and came around to score on a Sam Nott
groundout.
Darr reached base all four times to lead the Mount in the game,
going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Kane was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
On the mound, starter Kent Worthington did not allow a hit while
walking just one in three innings of work.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, March 19, with the
home opener against Saint Peter's at 3:30 p.m. at Straw Family
Stadium on campus.
Game Notes...Towson is now 16-2 in the all-time
series since the Mount's move to NCAA Division I in 1989...Towson
has won the past four meetings between the teams.
