Davidson, N.C. (February 26, 2010)-
The Mount St. Mary's baseball team dropped its season-opener,
4-2, at Davidson on Friday night. The Mount opened the season on
the right note when leadoff hitter Tommy Flynn belted a home run in
the team's first at bat of the year. Davidson, however, was able
to rally for the victory.
Davidson (3-2) evened the score in the bottom of the third
inning with an unearned run. Coleman Barron singled and moved to
second on an error. Consecutive wild pitches from Kapothanasis
allowed Barron to score the tying run.
Mount St. Mary's regained the lead in the top of the sixth
inning. Kyle Kane singled to right field and moved to second on an
error. Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year Shane
Eyler then followed with an RBI double to give the Mount the
lead.
The Wildcats answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to
even the score. James Cerbie singled and then scored on a Danny
Weiss double. Davidson posted the go-ahead run in the bottom of
the seventh. The Wildcats loaded the bases on a double, a hit
batsmen, a sacrifice bunt and a walk. Cerbie was then hit by a
pitch to force home the go-ahead run.
The Mount threatened in the eighth when Jacob Darr led off with
a double and Kane followed with a walk. Eyler, however, hit into a
double play and Josh Winter grounded out to end the inning.
Davidson added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a
bases-loaded walk by Michael Zelbo.
Kapothanasis had a strong opening-game start, allowing an
unearned run and just two hits in five innings of work. He struck
out five with two walks. Brady Feigl took the loss, allowing two
runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
Davidson starter Thomas Middour had eight strikeouts in five
innings in the start. Mike Frongello picked up the win, allowing
one run in four innings of relief, including striking out the side
in the ninth.
The Mount faces Presbyterian in a neutral-site game at Davidson
tomorrow before facing the Wildcats again on Sunday.
