EMMITSBURG, Md. - Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) scored
twice to help the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team end the season
with a 2-all standstill against No. 11 Monmouth in Northeast
Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Friday.
Playing in his final collegiate game, Fenstermacher tied the
game at 1 in the 73rd minute and then tied the game at 2 in the
78th minute. The senior finishes his career with six goals and one
assist for 13 points.
Fellow senior Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) dished
out assists on both of his classmates tallies for the Mount
(7-10-1, 4-5-1 NEC) while Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St.
Francis Xavier) had a hand in Fenstermacher's first goal of the
afternoon. Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made
four saves in his final collegiate contest.
Ryan Clark and Kevin Davis each scored for the Hawks (12-1-3,
6-0-3 NEC) and Bryan Meredith had four stops in the match.
Monmouth grabbed a 1-0 advantage and a 2-0 lead, but led by its
seniors Mount St. Mary's rallied to end in a tie against the
11th-ranked program in the nation. Coming into the match, the Hawks
had only allowed seven goals on the year and only two markers in
league play.
Clark gave Monmouth the early 1-0 advantage when he found the
twine off a baseline pass from RJ Allen at the 6:04 mark.
The score stayed that way until the 73rd minute when Phinith hit
a serve from the left to center and then Wheeler touched it to
Fenstermacher who found the back of the net at 72:54 to even the
match at 1.
Nearly five minutes later, the Hawks answered when Davis knocked
in a rebound from George Quintano at 77:02 to take a 2-1 edge.
Phinith and Fenstermacher did not take long to reconnect after
Phinith passed the ball to Fenstermacher, who blasted a shot into
the upper right corner to even the game at 2 at the 77:57 mark.
After the game was knotted, Monmouth had a shot by Anthony
Vasquez stopped by Davis at 79:50 and Allen missed high at 84:42
before Fenstermacher gave the Mountaineers its final scoring chance
in regulation, but missed high at 86:27.
In the first overtime, Mount St. Mary's outshot the Hawks 4-1.
Wheeler had all four shots for the Mount. Meredith made saves on
the junior's scoring chances at 92:02 and 98:29 while Wheeler
missed wide at 95:37 and 99:59. Allen had the only shot for the
Hawks, but Davis made a diving save at 97:42.
Matt Beverin started the scoring opportunities in the second
overtime, but missed wide for Monmouth at 102:33. Phinith had the
only chance for Mount St. Mary's in overtime, but Meredith turned
it away at 103:45 and Clark had the final shot for the Hawks and
that was blocked by the Mount's defense at 107:24.
With his two assists, Phinith moved into ninth place on the
program's all-time career assist list with 13 helpers and seventh
on the Mount Division I chart. Phinith finished his career with
five goals and 13 assists for 23 points. Davis concluded his career
as the program's all-time leader in minutes played (6058) and
ranked second in shutouts (17).
Senior Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) ended his career
with 17 goals and 17 assists for 51 points. He finished sixth in
program history in assists and fifth in Mount Division I history in
assists, sixth in points and seventh in goals.
Along with Davis, Detzel, Fenstermacher and Phinith, fellow
seniors Will Thomas (Mount Rainer, Md./The Heights) and Phil
Tavares (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha) were honored before the game.
