Second Half Goals Lift Quinnipiac Past Men's Soccer, 2-1

Box Score

HAMDEN, CONN. - Quinnipiac scored twice in the second half to come from behind to defeat Mount St. Mary's 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.

Alex Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) notched his first collegiate goal off senior Scott Phinith's (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) first point of the season for the Mount (4-6-0, 1-1-0 NEC) in the loss. Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made three saves for the Mountaineers.

"Today's match was disappointing in that we had plenty of opportunities to not left Quinnipiac back in the game and we did," said head coach Rob Ryerson. "We will regroup and be ready for our next match."

Matthew Rothbart scored the decisive goal for the Bobcats (1-5-1, 1-0-0 NEC) in the 87th minute while Pierre Soubrier registered Quinnipiac's other tally. Josh Lavallee made five saves in the winning effort.

Quinnipiac rallied from a one-goal deficit at halftime with two goals in the second half to down Mount St. Mary's and earn its first win of the year.

The Mount grabbed the early advantage when Alex Ockford headed in a corner kick serve from Phinith at the 25:19 mark.

With the Mountaineers holding a 1-0 edge, Soubrier knotted the game three minutes and six seconds into the final stanza on a penalty kick. Rothbart handed the Bobcats the win when he found the back of the net on a shot outside the box at 86:04 for a 2-1 lead.

After Quinnipiac tied the game, Mount St. Mary's had six shots on goal before Rothbart's decisive goal. Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) had shots stopped by Lavallee in the 57th and 62nd minutes. Will Jagger (Crowborough, England/Tunbridge Wells Boy Grammar School) hit the crossbar in the 76th minute to start a barrage of four shots on goal in a span of 67 seconds. After Jagger's shot, Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) , Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and Jagger each had chances blocked by the Bobcats defense in that stretch.

After Rothbart's tally, the Mount had a corner kick that resulted in a Wheeler shot stopped by Lavallee at the 87:06 mark to preserve the Bobcats victory.

With his assist, Phinith moved into ninth place on the program's Division I career assist list with 11 helpers.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action against Sacred Heart on Friday at the Waldron Family Stadium. Match time is 4 p.m.
