Emmitsburg, Md. (October 29, 2010)--Senior
Jenna Stern (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) scored
with 17 seconds left in the first overtime to lift Mount St. Mary's
to a 2-1 overtime win over Bryant on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Ragan Cote (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle
Beach) started the game-winning play by hustling down the
left sideline and pushing the ball to Kelly Baker
(Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) on the endline.
Baker found Stern open near the top of the penalty box and and she
scored the game-winner to the lower left corner of the goal.
Stern, who scored her first collegiate goal in her 71st career
game last Friday, finished her career by scoring twice over the
past three games.
Bryant (5-12-2, 3-5-1 NEC) took the lead in the 34th minute when
Alison Melley beat starting Mount goalkeeper Amanda
Kitzmiller (Mine Hill, N.J./Morris Catholic) with a nice
shot from 18 yards out inside the left post.
The Mount evened the score with 1:32 left in the half when
freshman Tierney Carabba (Erdenheim, Pa./Springfield
Township) collected a nice through ball from
Jourdan Brill (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and
slipped the ball past the keeper for her first collegiate goal.
Mount St. Mary's had a chance to win the game in regulation when
graduate student Kaylyn Mahon (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring
Grove) had her shot into an empty goal blocked by defender
Casey Schifano.
In the first overtime, Cote had a chance to end the game when
she broke in one-on-one with Bryant goalkeeper Lauren Viverito, but
she pushed her shot high.
Playing with a strong wind advantage in the first half, Bryant
held an 8-to-4 advantage in shots in the opening half. The
Mount got the wind advantage in the second half and the first
overtime, outshooting Bryant 11-to-5 the rest of the way.
Junior goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz,
Pa./Warwick) came into the game at halftime for the Mount,
making four saves in 54:23 to earn the win. Kitzmiller made
three saves in the opening half. Viverito made four saves in
the loss.
