Ockford Nets Game-Winner In 4-3 Overtime Win Against Bryant; Chris Wheeler Ties Single-Season And Career Mount Division I Goal Mark

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Alex Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) scored the game-winning goal with 1:20 left in overtime to lift Mount St. Mary's past Bryant 4-3 in overtime in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Friday.

Senior Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) served a free kick into the box that hit off the post near where Ockford was positioned when the sophomore drilled the ball into the twine for his second game-winner of the season and third tally of his career. Along with his team-leading seventh assist, Detzel added his third goal of the year.

Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) made some history on the night after scoring twice for the Mount (6-9-0, 3-4-0 NEC) in the winning effort. Chris Wheeler tied the Mount Division I record with 12 goals and a season and also tied the Mount Division I record for career goals with 32 markers. The junior also had eight shots on the night to become the program's all-time leader in career shots.

Patrick Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) dished out his first two collegiate assists and Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) turned away four shots on the night.

Norbert Guery paced the Bulldogs (4-7-2, 2-3-2 NEC) with two goals and an assist while Tom Nelan added a tally and a helper and Victor Tutino made seven saves in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game in regulation before Ockford sent the crowd home happy with the decisive score in overtime.

Trailing 3-1 with 12 minutes remaining, the Mount started the comeback when Detzel headed in a serve from Patrick Wheeler from 30-yards out to cut the margin to one goal at 78:10 and give the freshman his first collegiate point. The younger Wheeler then helped the Mountaineers tie the match and give his elder brother a spot in the record books. Patrick Wheeler served in a cross from the right side of the field to Chris Wheeler, who found the netting at the 86:27 mark to even the score at 3.

After the Mount had a couple of chances in overtime including a penalty kick, Ockford scored the game-winner at 98:40 to hand Mount St. Mary's the victory.

Chris Wheeler got the scoring started on the night when he scored unassisted 18 seconds into the contest to give the Mount an early 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs responded to score three-straight goals to grab a 3-1 edge with 22 minutes and three seconds remaining. Guery tied the game at 1 at 10:49 off a helper from Nelan. Guery handed Bryant the lead less than five minutes later when he scored off a long ball from Joseph DiMauro at 15:37. Nelan then extended the lead to two goals when Nuery returned the favor at the 67:57 mark. Mount St. Mary's then scored the final three goals of the night to end a two-game losing streak.

After the Bulldogs scored their third goal of the contest they did not register another scoring chance the rest of the night.

Detzel moved into sixth place on the Mount Division I list for points (49) and seventh in assists (16). Wheeler also had 12 goals in his freshman campaign.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Oct. 29 at home against Robert Morris. Game time is 7 p.m.
