BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Long Island scored twice in the second half to
down Mount St. Mary's 3-2 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's
soccer action on Sunday.
Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) scored
two goals for the Mount (5-9-0, 2-4-0 NEC) and now has 10 goals
this season while Alex Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) recorded an
assist on Wheeler's first tally of the afternoon.
Steve Jakubowski dished out the two assists and then found the
twine for the game-winner to fuel the Blackbirds (4-7-1, 2-2-1 NEC)
while Dan Sauerhoff and Jakeem Johnson also scored. Adam Janssen
turned away four shots in the winning effort.
Long Island rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to score twice
in the second half and earn its second-straight win against Mount
St. Mary's.
After Wheeler scored twice to give the Mount a 2-1 lead at the
break, the Blackbirds posted two goals in a span of two minutes and
five seconds to come away with the victory.
Johnson tied the game when took a pass from Jakubowski at the
61:07 mark before Jakubowski nailed a line drive into the net from
the top of the box for the decisive score at 63:12 for a 3-2
advantage.
Jakubowski helped Long Island grab an early 1-0 edge by
assisting Sauerhoff's tally on a corner kick at the 6:54 mark.
Elliot Kane also recorded an assist on the play.
Wheeler then answered for the Mountaineers. The junior found the
twine off an Ockford assist at the 18:24 mark to tie the match at
1. Wheeler then notched his 10 goal of the season when he knocked a
shot in an open net at 37:56 for a 2-1 advantage. The Blackbirds
then scored twice in the second half to earn the win.
Mount St. Mary's had a couple of chances after Long Island took
the lead, but could not convert. Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie,
Pa./Emmaus) had his shot saved in the 65th minute before Wheeler
gave the Mount its final chance with 1:42 on the clock, but his
shot was turned away.
With his two goals, Wheeler moves into fifth place on the
program's all-time career goal list with 30 tallies. The junior is
only the second player in Mount Division I history to post 30 goals
in a career.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday at home against
Bryant. Match time is 7 p.m.
