HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac defeated Mount St. Mary's 2-1 in
Northeast Conference (NEC) women's soccer action on Sunday.
Sarah Malpezzi (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) scored her third goal
for the Mount (3-8-3, 0-4-1 NEC) while Alicia Miller (Lititiz,
Pa./Warwick) made three saves in the loss.
Kristina Del Mistro paced the Bobcats (4-5-2, 2-1-2 NEC) with a
goal and an assist. Jillian Strassner added her third goal of the
season and Jillian Kelley turned away four shots in the winning
effort.
Quinnipiac grabbed a 2-0 advantage and held on after Mount St.
Mary's cut the margin to one late in the second half for its fourth
win of the year.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard right before halftime when
Strassner headed in a pass from Del Mistro for a 1-0 edge at the
41:30 mark. Quinnipiac added to its lead 15 minutes later when Del
Mistro found the twine for the eventual game-winner off a Furtuna
Velaj helper at 56:31 for a 2-0 lead.
The Mount cut the deficit to one goal after Malpezzi knocked in
a deflection in the box at the 81:26 mark. After the junior scored,
she gave the Mountaineers two more scoring chances in the final
eight minute. Malpezzi's shot was saved at 85:07 before she gave
the squad its final chance and missed wide at 88:16.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday at the Waldron
Family Stadium against Sacred Heart. Match time is 4 p.m.
