Mount Downs Drexel, 3-2, to Sweep Weekend Trip to Philadelphia

Philadelphia, Pa. (September 6, 2009)--Sophomore Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) scored with just under 22 minutes remaining to lift Mount St. Mary's to a 3-2 win at Drexel on Sunday afternoon. The win, coupled with a 2-1 victory at Saint Joseph's on Friday night, gave the Mount a two-game sweep of its weekend trip to Philadelphia.

For the second-straight game, the Mount rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to earn the victory. Drexel's Michelle Donnelly scored unassisted 17:01 into the game to give the Dragons (0-4) the early lead. The Mount was able to even the score right before the half. Senior Kim Karpinski (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) tallied her first goal of the season with 2:04 left in the half on an assist from graduate student Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven).

The Mount (2-3-0) grabbed its first lead of the game in the 58th minute on an Emily Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) goal. Menotti's goal was the 10th of her career, moving her into a tie for eighth on the Mount's all-time goal list with Meghan Haspert. Senior Meghamn Brennan (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) had the assist on the goal.

Drexel evened the score just over three minutes later on a Jenna Lindsay goal, but Winship came through for the Mount seven minutes later with the game-winning goal. Winship's shot from just inside the box on the left side was placed just over Drexel goalkeeper Nicole Sinclair's head. It caromed high off the post and back into the Drexel goal to give the Mount the lead, 3-2.

The Mount's weekend sweep breaks a couple of long droughts for the program. The Mount has not won two straight games since back-to-back wins over Saint Peter's and Howard during the 2005 season. In addition, the Mountaineers have not won back-to-back games on the road since besting Saint Francis (Pa.) and Marist in October of 1996.

Drexel outshot the Mount 20-13 in the game, but Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Warwick, Pa./Lititz) stymied the Dragons with 12 saves. She preserved the win when she stopped Sydney Douglas, who broke in alone on goal, in the final minute of the game. Miller is averaging 8.80 saves per game this season.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, September 11, with the program's first-ever home night game against Bucknell at Waldron Family Stadium. Kick-off for the game is slated for 7:00 p.m. Lights were installed in the Mount's Waldron Family Stadium this past spring.
