George Washington Downs Men's Soccer, 4-2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - George Washington scored three unanswered goals to defeat Mount St. Mary's 4-2 in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday.

Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) notched his second goal this season for the Mount (1-6-0) while Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made four saves in the loss.

Mike Rowlings, Marcus Ranney, Andy Stadler and Kyle Albrecht each found the back of the net for the Colonials (4-3-0), and Erik Haug turned away three shots in the winning effort.

After Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 1 in the 28th minute, George Washington scored the next three tallies and never looked back to earn its fifth win against the Mountaineers.

With four seconds left in the first half, Ranney nailed a shot from 25-yards away that hit off the right post and into the netting to break a 1-all standstill. Mattia Melillo was credited with the assist on the play.

Stadler then increased the advantage to 3-1 with his team-leading seventh tally of the year when he scored from 30-yards away into the lower right corner off a free kick at 51:39.

Albrecht sealed the win with his first goal of the season off helpers by Erick Perez-Segnini and Luke Wildy at 78:41 for a 4-1 lead.

The Mountaineers cut the deficit to 4-2 when the squad was credited with an own goal at 82:52.

The Colonials got the scoring started on the afternoon when Rollings scored unassisted at 3:42.

Detzel answered with a hard, dipping shot from 25-yards away for his second goal of the year to tie the match at 1 at the 27:55 mark, but George Washington scored the next three markers to come away with the victory.

Detzel's goal was the Mount's first score in 254 minutes and 51 seconds dating back to Chris Wheeler's (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) goal in the 16th minute against UMBC on Sept. 12. The junior leads the squad with two goals and an assist for five points in 2009.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday against Fairleigh Dickinson in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener and rematch of last year's NEC Championship Game. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
