Emmitsburg, Md. (August 23, 2009)--Loyola edged
Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, on Sunday in women's soccer action at
Waldron Family Stadium on campus in the season opener for both
teams. Mount St. Mary's sophomore goalkeeper Alicia
Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made 12 saves in the
loss.
Miller kept the Mount in the game in the first half, making four
saves, including a pair where she tipped the ball over the cross
bar. Despite being outshot 10-1 in the opening half, the Mount had
the best scoring chance in the opening frame. Sophomore forward
Sadie Winship (York,
Pa./Eastern York) was sent in alone on the goalkeeper, but
she drove the shot right into the hands of Loyola goalkeeper
Brittany Henderson, as the score was tied 0-0 at the half.
The opening minutes
of the second half saw each team have good scoring chances.
Loyola's Colleen Kinealy was denied on a shot by a diving save from
Miller just 20 seconds into the half. Loyola's Kelly Farrell had a
chance to score on the rebound, but her shot was just wide to the
left.
The Mount countered
when senior forward Emily Menotti (Dover,
Pa./Dover) was fouled on a near breakaway 1:55 into the
half. Winship took the ensuing free kick and had her shot tipped
over the crossbar by Henderson. On the corner kick, Winship drove
the ball to the middle where freshman Jourdan Brill (Lancaster,
Pa./Penn Manor) headed the ball toward the lower left
corner of the goal, only to be denied on a diving stop from
Henderson.
The Greyhounds
finally broke through with 31:18 left in the game. Tessa McLanahan
tipped a cross from Theresa Ferraina over Miller's head for the
only score of the contest.
The Mount had an
outstanding scoring chance with just under 22 minutes left when
freshman Kelly Baker
(Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) took a long feed from
sophomore Mary McCarron (Beltsville,
Md./Elizabeth Seton) and drove a shot that was about
one-foot wide right of the goal.
Loyola held a 21-to-5
advantage in shots in the game, including a 10-to-1 margin in the
opening half. Mount goalkeeper Miller made eight of her 12 saves
in the second half. Henderson had three saves in the victory for
the Greyhounds.
The Mount returns to
action on Friday, August 28, with a 7:00 p.m. game at George
Mason.
