Mount Wins Halted Game, 11-9, over Central Connecticut State; Drops Series Finale, 15-3.

New Britain, Conn. (May 9, 2009)—Shane Eyler hit a two-run homer to lift Mount St. Mary's to an 11-9 victory at Central Connecticut State in the completion of Thursday's halted game. The game was halted by fog in the top of the eighth inning on Thursday night with CCSU leading, 7-6. In the final game of the four-game series, the Blue Devils earned a 15-3 victory.

The Mount got going early on Saturday, scoring three times in the top of the eighth to take a 9-7 lead. Tommy Flynn singled and Mike Matta walked to put two runners on base. Jacob Darr then singled to even the score before Kyle Kane hit a two-run double to give the Mount a 9-7 lead.

The Blue Devils answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Mitch Wells and Sean Allaire each had RBI singles off Mount closer Matta to force extra innings.

In the 10th, Darr doubled and Kane singled to put runners on first and third. Darr, however, was picked off, but Eyler was able to pick him up with a two-run homer, his team-leading 13th of the year, to give the Mount an 11-9 advantage. Matta worked around a two-out error in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.

Eyler went 3-for-4 with four RBI to pace the Mount to the win while Kane went 3-for-6 with a pair of runs driven in. Darr posted a 4-for-5 day with two runs scored. Matta pitched three innings of relief, allowing a pair of runs, to earn the victory to improve to 5-1 on the year. So far in the series, Matta has recorded two wins and a save.

The Mount (21-23, 13-9 NEC) took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Buddy Fields walked with one out and moved to second on Jacob Darr's base hit. Fields, however, was caught stealing third base for the second out. Kane then rapped a single up the middle before Eyler followed with a base hit to plate Darr with the first run of the game.

The Blue Devils (23-18, 13-10 NEC) answered in the bottom of the first when Pat Epps connected for a two-run homer off Mount starter Brady Feigl.

Mount St. Mary's evened the score in the top of the fourth inning. Kane reached on an error to open the frame. With two outs, Josh Winter singled to put runners on first and second. Designated hitter Joe Kavanagh followed with a base hit to right field to score Kane to even the score at 2-2.

Central Connecticut State answered in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. Epps led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Jay Schillaci's double. Richie Tri then singled to center field to give CCSU a 4-2 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, Fields and Darr singled to put runners on first and second for the Mount for Eyler, who singled to right field to drive in Fields to cut the deficit to 4-3. Matt Staso was then walked to load the bases, but CCSU pitcher Dan Markoya ended the threat with a strikeout.

Central Connecticut again answered the Mount's run on an RBI double from Anthony Scialdone in the bottom of the fifth. The hit extended Scialdone's hit streak to 28 games.

It was the Mount's turn to answer in the sixth. Zach Helman doubled with one out for Mount St. Mary's. After Flynn was retired on a fly out to left, pinch hitter Mike Matta drilled his first collegiate home run to even the score at 5-5.

CCSU responded in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Tommy Meade singled with one out and moved to second on a Sean Parker walk. The runners then moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch before Mitch Wells lofted a fly ball to center field to give the Blue Devils a 6-5 advantage. Allaire then greeted Mount reliever Max Brittenham with an RBI single to restore Central Connecticut's two-run lead.

In the top of the seventh, Eyler walked to open the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jason Foster came on in relief and Staso singled through the left side to put runners on first and third with no outs. Winter grounded into a fielder's choice to score Eyler to make the score 7-6, but Foster got Kavanagh to ground into a double play to end the inning.

Walko and Scialdone recorded back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the seventh. Brittenham escaped the jam by getting a double-play ball and a ground out to keep the score at 7-6.

In the second game of the twinbill, CCSU scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break the game open.

Eyler went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the game. It was his 14th home run of the season. Flynn added a pair of hits for the Mount in the loss.

Tri, Allaire and Parker each had three hits in the victory for the Blue Devils.

The Mount closes out the regular season with a four-game home series against Sacred Heart, beginning with a nine-inning game on Thursday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m. at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
