Britain, Conn. (May 9, 2009)Shane Eyler hit a
two-run homer to lift Mount St. Mary's to an 11-9 victory at
Central Connecticut State in the completion of Thursday's halted
game. The game was
halted by fog in the top of the eighth inning on Thursday night
with CCSU leading, 7-6. In the final game of the four-game series,
the Blue Devils earned a 15-3 victory.
The
Mount got going early on Saturday, scoring three times in the top
of the eighth to take a 9-7 lead. Tommy Flynn singled and Mike
Matta walked to put two runners on base. Jacob Darr then singled
to even the score before Kyle Kane hit a two-run double to give the
Mount a 9-7 lead.
The
Blue Devils answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
eighth. Mitch Wells and Sean Allaire each had RBI singles off
Mount closer Matta to force extra innings.
In
the 10th, Darr doubled and Kane singled to put runners on first and
third. Darr, however, was picked off, but Eyler was able to pick
him up with a two-run homer, his team-leading 13th of the year, to
give the Mount an 11-9 advantage. Matta worked around a two-out
error in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.
Eyler
went 3-for-4 with four RBI to pace the Mount to the win while Kane
went 3-for-6 with a pair of runs driven in. Darr posted a 4-for-5
day with two runs scored. Matta pitched three innings of relief,
allowing a pair of runs, to earn the victory to improve to 5-1 on
the year. So far in the series, Matta has recorded two wins and a
save.
The
Mount (21-23, 13-9 NEC) took the early lead with a run in the top
of the first inning. Buddy
Fields walked with one out and moved to second on Jacob Darr's base
hit. Fields, however, was
caught stealing third base for the second out. Kane then rapped a single up the
middle before Eyler followed with a base hit to plate Darr with the
first run of the game.
The
Blue Devils (23-18, 13-10 NEC) answered in the bottom of the first
when Pat Epps connected for a two-run homer off Mount starter Brady
Feigl.
Mount
St. Mary's evened the score in the top of the fourth inning. Kane reached on an error to open
the frame. With two outs,
Josh Winter singled to put runners on first and second. Designated hitter Joe Kavanagh
followed with a base hit to right field to score Kane to even the
score at 2-2.
Central
Connecticut State answered in the bottom of the fourth with a pair
of runs. Epps led off the
inning with a single and moved to third on Jay Schillaci's
double. Richie Tri then
singled to center field to give CCSU a 4-2 advantage.
In
the top of the fifth, Fields and Darr singled to put runners on
first and second for the Mount for Eyler, who singled to right
field to drive in Fields to cut the deficit to 4-3. Matt Staso was then walked to load the
bases, but CCSU pitcher Dan Markoya ended the threat with a
strikeout.
Central
Connecticut again answered the Mount's run on an RBI double from
Anthony Scialdone in the bottom of the fifth. The hit extended Scialdone's hit
streak to 28 games.
It
was the Mount's turn to answer in the sixth. Zach Helman doubled with one out for
Mount St. Mary's. After
Flynn was retired on a fly out to left, pinch hitter Mike Matta
drilled his first collegiate home run to even the score at
5-5.
CCSU
responded in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Tommy Meade singled with one out
and moved to second on a Sean Parker walk. The runners then moved up 90 feet on a
wild pitch before Mitch Wells lofted a fly ball to center field to
give the Blue Devils a 6-5 advantage. Allaire then greeted Mount reliever
Max Brittenham with an RBI single to restore Central Connecticut's
two-run lead.
In
the top of the seventh, Eyler walked to open the inning and moved
to second on a wild pitch.
Jason Foster came on in relief and Staso singled through the left
side to put runners on first and third with no outs. Winter grounded into a fielder's
choice to score Eyler to make the score 7-6, but Foster got
Kavanagh to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Walko
and Scialdone recorded back-to-back singles to open the bottom of
the seventh. Brittenham
escaped the jam by getting a double-play ball and a ground out to
keep the score at 7-6.
In
the second game of the twinbill, CCSU scored eight runs in the
bottom of the fifth inning to break the game open.
Eyler
went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the game. It was his 14th
home run of the season. Flynn added a pair of hits for the Mount
in the loss.
Tri,
Allaire and Parker each had three hits in the victory for the Blue
Devils.
The
Mount closes out the regular season with a four-game home series
against Sacred Heart, beginning with a nine-inning game on
Thursday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m. at E.T. Straw Family
Stadium.
