Emmitsburg, Md. (April 5, 2009)—Sophomore Shane Eylerpowered Mount St. Mary's to a doubleheader sweep of Quinnipiac in Northeast Conference action on Sunday afternoon. Eyler went 4-for-6 with three home runs and eight RBI combined to help the Mount to 11-2 and 8-4 victories.

The Mount, which has won eight of its past nine games and is 12-4 since opening the season with six straight losses, swept the four-game series to move into first place in the NEC.

Eyler went 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI to help the Mount to an 11-2 victory in the opening game of the twinbill. Buddy Fields went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Jacob Darr 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Kyle Kane 1-for-1 with two runs scored and three RBI in the game.

Mount St. Mary's (12-10, 4-0 NEC) took control early with a five-run first inning. Fields opened the game with an infield single and moved to second on Darr's base hit up the middle. With one out, Kane plated both runners with a double to left center field for a 2-0 Mount lead. Eyler followed with his first homer on the day to give the Mount a four-run cushion. Alex Andrews hit into a force play to score Josh Winter for the fifth run of the inning.

The Mount added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Fields doubled and Darr was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Matt Staso beat out an infield hit to load the bases and Kane hit a sacrifice fly to score Fields for a 6-0 advantage. Eyler then laced a two-run double over the center fielder's head to give the Mount an 8-0 lead.

Eyler belted his second home run of the game in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to make the score 10-0. Darr's RBI single in the fifth gave the Mount an 11-0 lead.

Freshman starter Brady Feigl lost his shutout bid with one out in the seventh when Ben Farina hit a two-run homer.

Feigl (3-0) scattered seven hits and struck out five to earn the victory in the game. Colin Stuver came on to get the final two outs of the contest.

In the nightcap, the Mount jumped to an 8-0 lead and held on for the 8-4 victory. Tommy Flynn, Darr, Winter and Joe Kavanagh each had two hits in the victory.

The Mount took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Kane and Eyler connected for back-to-back home runs. Kane's shot was a high fly down the left field line while Eyler's was a blast over the left center fence. It was the third home run of the day and sixth of the season for Eyler.

Mount St. Mary's took control with a five-run third inning. Flynn and Darr each singled and Kane reached on a fielder's choice when the second-baseman dropped the ball on a toss from the shortstop to load the bases. Eyler then walked to force home Flynn for a 3-0 lead.

Winter followed by lacing the ball down the left-field line for a two-run single. He moved to second on the throw. Kavanagh added a two-run double off the center-field fence to give the Mount a 7-0 advantage.

Darr added an RBI single in the fourth to give the Mount an 8-0 advantage.

Quinnipiac (7-17, 0-4 NEC) got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Chris Migani singled, Bryn Doyle doubled, and Brian Monack singled to drive home both runners to cut the Mount's lead to 8-2. Mike Matta entered in relief of starter Kent Worthington and got a double-play and a fly out to end the threat.

The Bobcats added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the ninth for the final score of 8-4.

Worthington allowed two runs and six hits in five innings to earn the win and improve to 1-4 on the season. Matta pitched four innings of relief, allowing two hits and two unearned runs, to pick up his third save of the season.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, April 7, with a 3:30 p.m. game against James Madison at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
