Fairfax, Va. (March 31, 2009)--The Mount St.
Mary's baseball team saw its four-game win streak snapped by a
red-hot George Mason team, 5-3, on Tuesday afternoon. Matt
Staso (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) went 2-for-5 with a
run scored and a stolen base to pace the Mount (8-10) in the
game.
George Mason, which has won 16 of its past 18 games and is a
perfect 11-0 at home this year, scored a run in the bottom of the
first off Mount starter Brett
Moore (Clifton, Va./Paul VI). Spencer Wiggins and Chris
Henderson each singled in the frame with Wiggins scoring on a
Justin Bour sacrifice fly.
The Mount answered with a run in the top of the four inning to even
the score. Staso singled to right field with one out and moved to
second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Kyle
Kane (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) and a fly out, Staso stole
third and then scored on a Joe
Kavanagh (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) base hit.
The Patriots (20-5) answered in the bottom half of the inning on a
solo home run by Brent Weiss. The Mount, however, countered with a
pair of runs in the top of the sixth to grab a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth, Kane singled up the middle to lead things off. Shane
Eyler (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) then grounded to
short, but the throw to second was off the mark, putting runners at
second and third for the Mount with no outs. After a strikeout,
the Mount evened the score on Josh
Winter's (Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) sacrifice fly. Alex
Andrews (Vienna, Va./James Madison) then laced a single to
right-center field to plate Eyler with the go-ahead run.
Tony
Quaranta (New Freedom, Pa./Loyola Blakefield (Md.)) singled to
move Andrews to third with Quaranta moving to second on the throw.
Scott Krieger, however, made a sliding catch in left field to rob
Tommy
Flynn (Reston, Va./South Lakes) of a hit and save two runs.
The Patriots then tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a
suicide squeeze bunt from Wiggins to make the score 3-3. George
Mason then scored twice in the seventh to earn the victory. Ryan
Soares doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. He
then scored the go-ahead run on a slow roller to shortstop. The
Patriots added an insurance run on a Weiss single to right
field.
Quaranta finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate while eight of the
Mount's nine starters recorded hits in the contest. Moore allowed
one run and two hits in two innings of work in the start. Max
Brittenham (2 IP, 1K) and Brady
Feigl (2.1 IP, 2K) each allowed one run in relief. Kent
Worthington (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) allowed two runs
in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Wiggins led George Mason with three hits while Henderson, Soares
and Weiss each had two hits in the win.
The Mount returns to action on Friday, April 3, when Northeast
Conference rival Quinnipiac visits for a 3:00 p.m. game. It is the
NEC opener for both teams and the first game of a four-game
series.
