Emmitsburg, Md. (March 22, 2009)--Mount St. Mary's
split a doubleheader with visiting Penn on Sunday afternoon at
Straw Family Stadium on campus. The Mount lost the first game 11-4
before coming back to take the nightcap, 7-1.
In the second game, freshman Josh Winter
(Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) cracked a two-run homer in the bottom
of the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and propel the Mount to the
victory. It was Winter's first collegiate home run.
The Mount (5-9) added a pair of runs in
both the fifth and sixth innings to seal the victory. In the
fifth, Matt Staso (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) doubled to
right center field and scored on a Kyle Kane (Boonsboro,
Md./Boonsboro) base hit through the right side of the infield.
Kane moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a ground out, and
scored on a Joe Kavanagh (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) sacrifice
fly.
In the sixth inning, Tony Quaranta (New
Freedom, Pa./Loyola Blakefield) singled with one out. Pinch runner
Tommy Flynn (Reston, Va./South Lakes) stole second and Buddy Fields
(Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) followed with a double to left.
Flynn had to hold up on the play to make sure the ball fell in and
moved to third on the play. Jacob Darr (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas
Johnson) followed with a two-run double to make the score 7-1.
Brady Feigl (Severn, Md./Old Mill)
allowed one hit with two strikeouts in three innings of relief to
earn his first collegiate victory. Starter Brett Moore (Clifton,
Va./Paul VI) allowed one run and four hits in four innings for the
Mount.
Fields went 2-for-3 with two runs scored
and a stolen base in the victory. William Gorodon went 2-for-4
with a solo home run to pace Penn (9-7) in the first game.
In the opening game of the twinbill, Penn
scored four times in the top of the second inning and five times in
the top of the ninth to earn the 11-4 victory.
The Mount took a 1-0 lead with a run in
the bottom of the first inning. Staso walked and moved to third on
a pair of wild pitches. Kane drew a two-out walk and the Mount
scored on a double steal when Staso knocked the ball away from
first basesman Gordon covering at the plate after a rundown.
Penn answered with four runs in the top
of the second inning. Gordon homered to lead off the fram while
Will Davis, Steve Gable, James Mraz and Adrian Thomas each added
doubles in the inning.
Alex Andrews (Vienna, Va./James Madison)
drove home Andres Tamayo (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) with a
base hit in the bottom of the second to cut the defict to 4-2.
Penn added two runs in the sixth on a
Derek Vigoa RBI double and a Mraz RBI single.
The Mount plated a pair of runs in the
bottom of the seventh to make the score 6-4. Statso doubled to
left center field to score Fields while Darr added a sacrifice
fly.
Penn sealed the win with five runs in the
top of the ninth.
Mraz went 3-for-5 with two runs scored
and two RBI while Dan Williams, Gordon, Davis and Vigoa added two
hits each in the win. Paul Cusick struck out nine while allowing
four runs in seven innings to earn the win while Tom Grandieri
pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday,
March 24, when Maryland-Baltimore County visits Straw Family
Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. game.
