Baseball Wins 2009 Home Opener Against George Washington, 6-2

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Michael Foster (Easton, Md./Easton) posted two hits, an RBI and a run scored in his E.T. Straw Stadium debut to lead Mount St. Mary's past George Washington 6-2 in non-conference baseball action on Thursday.

With the game tied at 1, Foster knocked in his first collegiate RBI to give the Mount (2-6) the lead it would not relinquish in the second inning and then later scored in the inning in his Emmitsburg debut.

Zach Helman (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) added two hits, two RBIs and a run scored while Matt Staso (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) knocked in a pair of runs in the contest. Costa Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) allowed one hit in 5.2 innings of relief with one strikeout to earn the victory.

Tom Zebroski paced the Colonials (6-9) with his fourth home run of the year in the first inning and Gavin Swanson also registered an RBI in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and go on for its second-straight victory.

After Zebroski hit a home run with two outs in the first inning to give George Washington a 1-0 edge, the Mount answered with five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead.

With one out, Josh Winter (Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) singled through the middle and then stole second. After Joe Kavanagh (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) walked, Helman singled through the right side to plate Winter and tie the game at 1. Foster then singled up the middle to score Kavanagh to hand the Mountaineers the lead for good. Mike Matta (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) reached on an infield single before Staso brought home Helman and Foster on a single to right center for a 4-1 advantage. A delayed steal by Staso helped Mount St. Mary's pull of a double steal with Matta touching home for a four-run advantage.

George Washington answered with a run in the top of the third on Swanson RBI fielder's choice to trim the deficit to 5-2, but back-to-back doubles by Kavanagh and Helman in the bottom of the stanza gave the Mount a 6-2 lead. Kapothanasis took over in the fourth and didn't allow a Colonial past second base the rest of the way.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday at home against Bucknell. Game time is 3 p.m.
