West Palm Beach, Fla. (March 1, 2009)--The Mount St. Mary's
baseball team dropped a pair of games in Florida on Sunday
afternoon. The Mount lost to Villanova, 7-5, before dropping a
10-6 decision to St. Bonaventure at the Palm Beach Challenge
In the Villanova game, the Mount (0-3) jumped to a 2-0 lead with
a pair of runs in the first inning. Villanova rallied with a
five-run third inning, but the Mount was able to even the score at
5-5. The Wildcats, however, scored single runs in the sixth and
eighth innings to earn the victory.
Matt Staso went 3-for-5 at the plate in the loss while Kyle Kane
went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. Ryan Stamp went
2-for-3 with an RBI double while Joe Kavanagh was 2-for-3 with a
triple and an RBI. Brett Moore started and struck out four while
allowing five runs in five innings of work.
In the second game, the Mount jumped to a 6-2 lead before St.
Bonaventure rallied with six runs in the sixth inning, scoring all
the runs with two outs. The Bonnies then added two more runs to
earn the victory.
Kane was 3-for-3 with two walks, reaching base in all five of
his plate appearances in the game. Freshman Josh Winter went
3-for-4 at the plate while Staso had two RBIs in the contest.
Freshman Brady Feigl struck out five and allowed two runs in 5.2
innings of work in his collegiate debut.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday against New York
Tech.
