Emily Menotti's Late Goal Lifts Mount St. Mary's to 1-0 Win over Wagner

Emmitsburg, Md. (October 4, 2009)--Senior Emily Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) scored with just over 10 minutes remaining to lift the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Wagner in Northeast Conference action at Waldron Family Stadium on campus on Sunday afternoon.

The game-winning play started when freshman Amy Song (Clarksvlle, Md./River Hill) placed a long throw-in into the box. Sophomore Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) was able to flick a header to Menotti, who with her back to the goal, kicked the ball over her head over Wagner goalkeeper Samantha Schueschner for her third goal of the season from eight yards out.

Menotti's goal gives her 32 career points at the Mount, tying her for fifth on the school's all-time scoring list. It was the 12th goal of Menotti's career.

The goal came about five minutes after Wagner had almost taken the lead. Wagner's Julie Vigliotti got open on the right wing and drilled a shot off the crossbar with 15:15 left in the game.

In the opening half, each team had several good scoring chances. Vigliotti was denied by a diving save from Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) 14 minutes into the match. About four minutes later, Vigliotti was alone in front of Miller from 10 yards out, but shot the ball straight at Miller, who made the save.

The Mount, going against the wind in the first half, had three chances that were just wide of the goal in the opening half. Mary McCarron (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had a shot go just over the cross bar with 14 minutes left in the half. Kaitlyn Chambers (Knowlton, N.J./Notre Dame) and Jourdan Brill (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) had shots go just wide of the net late in the first half.

Mount St. Mary's had a 14-to-11 advantage in shots in the game, including a 9-to-6 edge in the second half. Miller posted five saves in the win, notching her second shutout of the season. Schueschner made four saves for Wagner in the loss.

The Mount returns to action on Sunday, October 11, with a 1:00 p.m. game at Bryant.
