Men's Soccer Battles Robert Morris To Scoreless Draw

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Powered by five saves by freshman Kyle McGehrin (Upper Marlboro, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Mount St. Mary's battled Robert Morris to a scoreless result in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.

McGehrin, who was making his first collegiate start, made five saves for the Mount (4-9-1, 3-3-1 NEC) including a stop in each overtime period to preserve the scoreless result and his first career shutout in 110 minutes of action.

Toba Bolaji made 11 saves for the Colonials (2-12-3, 2-3-3 NEC) on the afternoon.

Mount St. Mary's outshot Robert Morris 25-12 in the contest and both teams missed several chances to get on the scoreboard.

The Mount had the first scoring threat on the afternoon in the 11th minute when Will Thomas (Mount Rainer, Md./The Heights) created a chance for Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) by playing the ball from the endline into the box. Detzel beat Bolaji, but the Colonials were saved by their defense when Max Shinsky cleared the shot from the box.

Robert Morris' first good scoring threat came in the 61st minute when Neil Shaffer took a hard cross to the near post from Matt Sheibley. Shaffer dove to his left and deflected the ball on the net only to see McGehrin dive to his right to push the ball wide.

Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) nailed a shot from 25-yards out that curled from left to right before Bolaji tipped the ball over the net.

In the second overtime each team had a great opportunity to end the standstill. A corner kick by Detzel found Alex Ockford's (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) head eight yards out, but his shot was played away from the far post by Matt Griffin. Chris Wheeler, who had eight shots on the day, had the Mountaineers final scoring threat, but his header missed wide right in the 107th minute.

The next corner kick nearly ended the game, this time with the Colonials earning the opportunity in the final two minutes of the game. Sheibley's low kick found Shaffer at the far post. The junior's header was low and hard and force McGehrin quickly to the near post to deflect the shot. Sean Riley was first to the rebound, but his sliding attempt slid wide of the far post.

Mount St. Mary's, who is riding a three-game unbeaten streak, returns to action on Friday at home against Quinnipiac. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Mount sits tied for the fourth and final playoff spot with Sacred Heart and Fairleigh Dickinson with 10 points. The squad will face the Bobcats and Monmouth (Nov. 6) who are the top-2 teams in the NEC standings along with Central Connecticut State (Nov. 1) in the final three matches.
