TEANECK, N.J. - Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) scored two
goals, including the game-winner in the 37th minute to lead Mount
St. Mary's past Fairleigh Dickinson 2-1 in the Northeast Conference
(NEC) men's soccer opener for both teams on Friday.
Detzel notched his third and fourth tallies of the year and
posted his first two-goal performance since finding the twine twice
against Howard on Sept. 17, 2008.
Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) dished out an assist
on Detzel's first goal for the Mount (2-6-0, 1-0-0 NEC) while Chris
Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made four saves in the
winning effort.
Majdi Zaineh made three saves for the Knights (3-6-0, 0-1-0 NEC)
while the squad scored its lone tally on an own goal.
In a rematch of the 2008 NEC Championship Game, Mount St. Mary's
scored a pair of goals in the first half and held on to open the
league slate with a win for the second-straight season.
Phinith served the ball across the net to Detzel, who nailed the
shot into the bottom right corner to hand the Mountaineers a 1-0
advantage at the 5:08 mark.
The game became a 1-all standstill after Fairleigh Dickinson
registered a tally on an own goal at 31:33.
Detzel then scored the game-winning score when he dribbled down
the middle of the field and fired a shot into the left netting at
36:29 for a 2-1 advantage.
The Knights had a couple of chances to tie the game at 2, but
could not convert. Paul King had his shot saved in the 47th minute
by Davis before the junior stopped Cristian Vasconez in the 51st
minute. King had a scoring chance go off the cross bar in the 67th
minute before Tatenda Chimanda gave Fairleigh Dickinson its final
threat and missed high as time expired.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday at Sacred Heart.
Game time is 2:30 p.m.
