Emmitsburg, Md. (October 16, 2009)-Senior
Emily Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) scored in the
60th minute to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer
team to a 1-0 win over visiting Saint Francis (Pa.) at Waldron
Family Stadium on campus on Friday. It was the Mount's third
straight win to move the team's record to 5-7-2 overall and 3-1-1
in the Northeast Conference.
Menotti, who has scored the game-winning goal in each of the
Mount's three victories during the win streak, chipped a long pass
from senior Meghman Brennan (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank
Catholic) over Saint Francis (Pa.) goalkeeper Jessica
Boyer's head for the winning goal. It was Menotti's team-leading
fifth goal of the season and the 14th of her career at
the Mount.
The Mount, which dominated play throughout the game, had a great
scoring chance denied by Boyer in the 49th minute. On
that play, Menotti flicked a header over Boyer's head, but the
keeper was able to dive back to the goal and knock the ball of the
goal line to save a goal.
Mount St. Mary's had a chance to extend the lead in the
69th minute, but Menotti's header from right in front of
the goal was tipped off the post by Boyer.
The Mount outshot the Red Flash (7-5-2, 4-2-0 NEC) 11-0 in the
second half and held a 17-to-3 margin in shots in the game. Saint
Francis (Pa.) entered the day tied for first place in the
conference standings with 12 points.
The Red Flash had a great chance to open the scoring when
Rachael Seibert fed Brianna Butcher with a cross, but Butcher's
shot on a wide-open goal was wide to the right.
The Mount's best scoring chance in the opening half came in the
42nd minute when Jordan Brill (Lancaster,
Pa./Penn Manor) drove a shot that forced Boyer to make a
diving stop to her right.
Goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick)
had to make just one save to earn her third shutout of the season.
Miller has an impressive 0.56 GAA with a .917 save percentage in
five league games this season. Defender Nikole Gavriilidis
(Northvale, N.J./North Valley Old Tappan) held Seibert,
who entered the game second in the NEC in scoring, off the
scoresheet in the game.
The Mount's three-game win streak is the longest by a Mount team
since winning three in a row during the 1999 season. The
Mountaineer's 3-1-1 start is the team's best start in NEC play
since the 1997 team opened league play with an identical 3-1-1
mark.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday, October 18, with a
1:00 p.m. game at NEC rival Robert Morris.
