Wheeler And Detzel's First Half Tallies Power Men's Soccer Past High Point, 2-1

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) and Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) each scored in the first 20 minutes of the game to lift Mount St. Mary's past High Point in men's soccer action at the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational on Sunday.

Wheeler notched his second goal in the tournament in the third minute before Detzel found the twine in the 20th minute for his first tally of the season to help the Mount (2-1-0) to its second win in the first three games for the first time since 2006.

Vinnie Berry (Helensburgh, Scotland/St. Patrick) dished out the assist on Detzel's goal while Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made five saves in the winning effort.

Mike Stephenson scored in the final two minutes for the Panthers (1-2-0) and Michael Chesler turned away four shots in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's scored twice in the first half and held on to down High Point in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Wheeler got the Mount on the scoreboard early in the match after he converted a penalty kick at the 2:27 mark. Berry then found Detzel at 19:28 for the eventual game-winner and a 2-0 advantage.

With a shutout in the Mountaineers sights, the Panthers' Stephenson took a pass from Chris Schrum at the 88:27 mark to cut the margin to 2-1.

Schrum gave High Point some of its best chances to score prior to Stephenson's goal. Schrum had his shot turned away at the 46th and 86th minutes by Davis and also hit the post in the 65th and 67th minutes.

Mount St. Mary's has won two of its first three games for the fifth time under head coach Rob Ryerson. The Mount went 2-0-1 in 2006 and posted a 2-1-0 mark in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2008.

The Mountaineers return to action on Sept. 14 at home against Radford. Game time is 3 p.m.
