George Washington Rallies For 2-1 Win Against Men's Soccer

EMMITSBURG, Md. – George Washington scored two goals in the final nine minutes of the match to come from behind to defeat Mount St. Mary's 2-1 in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday.

Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Mount (3-5-0) while Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made six saves in the loss.

Andy Stadler posted both goals for the Colonials (4-2-1) and Andy Scheer turned away four shots in the winning effort.

George Washington scored twice in a span of two minutes and 36 seconds to overcome a one-goal deficit and come away with its fourth-straight win against the Mountaineers.

Trailing 1-0, Stadler took a pass from Ryan Ruffing and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1 at the 81:58 mark. Stadler then scored the game-winner after the ball was kicked ahead and then he made a move to score his team-leading ninth tally, handing the Colonials a 2-1 edge with five minutes and 26 seconds left.

The Mount had a free kick after a foul five yards in front of the penalty box in the closing minutes, but Wheeler has his kick blocked by the George Washington wall and the Mount would not have a scoring chance the rest of the match.

The game was scoreless for the first 66 minutes of the game before Steve Pathroff (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) served the ball from near midfield on the left and Wheeler flicked the ball into the twine at 66:38 to hand the Mountaineers a 1-0 edge. The lead would hold up for 15 minutes before Stadler, the current Atlantic-10 co-Player of the Week, took over the contest.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday at home against Navy. Start time is 3 p.m.
