UMBC Edges Men's Soccer, 2-1

BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC took a two goal advantage and held on for a 2-1 victory against Mount St. Mary's in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday.

Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) scored his third goal of the season for the Mount (3-4-0) while Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) dished out his team-leading third assist on the play. Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made four saves in the loss.

Andrew Bulls and Dustin Dzwonkowski each scored for the Retrievers (4-2-1) and Steve King made five stops in the winning effort.

UMBC took the early advantage and held on after Mount St. Mary's cut the deficit to one goal and had several scoring chances to knot the game to continue its 11-game unbeaten streak against the Mountaineers.

With the game scoreless, Levi Houapeu won a long ball and pushed the ball ahead to Andrew Bulls who registered his team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 14:07 mark to hand the Retrievers a 1-0 edge.

Dan Bulls helped set up the eventual game-winner when he flicked the ball ahead to Dwonkowski, who found the back of the net with his second goal at 60:23 for a 2-0 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's got on the scoreboard after Wheeler nailed a shot from 18-yards out near the inside post off a Detzel helper at the 73:34 mark to trim the margin to one goal.

After cutting the deficit to 2-1, the Mount had a couple of chances to tie the match, but could not convert. Vinnie Berry (Helensburgh, Scotland/St. Patrick's) had his shot blocked in the 79th minute and Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had his scoring chance sail wide in the 84th minute. Steve Pathroff (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) gave the Mountaineers their final scoring chance, but King turned away the shot with 43 seconds remaining.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday against George Washington at the Waldron Family Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
