EMMITSBURG,
Md. Seventeenth-ranked Loyola scored in the first five
minutes of the match and held off Mount St. Mary's 1-0 in
non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
Jamie
Darvill took a pass from Mark Jaskolski at the 4:40 mark and found
the back of the net for the lone goal of the game. The goal was
Darvill's fourth of the season while Jaskolski notched his first
collegiate point on the play.
Chris
Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) paced the Mount
(3-3-0) with four shots while Vinnie Berry (Helensburgh,
Scotland/Sgt. Patrick's) had three shots on the
afternoon.
Milos
Kocic made five saves for the Greyhounds (6-0-1) in the winning
effort.
Loyola
scored early in the game and went on for the win to help head coach
Mark Mettrick win in his first game back in Emmitsburg. Mettrick
coached the Mount for six seasons before leaving for the Greyhounds
in 2000.
Mount St.
Mary's outshot the Greyhounds 12-4 in the match and several
opportunities score against the nationally-ranked opponent, but
could not convert.
Wheeler
had his shot saved by Kocic in the first half and then Kocic turned
away a Wheeler shot in the final stanza. Ty Fenstermacher
(Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had his shot saved early in the second half
and Berry had two scoring chances halted by Kocic in the final
period, including a shot in the closing minutes of the
game.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action at UMBC on Tuesday. Game time is 4
p.m.
