Annapolis, Md. (September 19, 2008)--Navy scored four second half
goals to break open a close game en route to a 5-1 victory over
Mount St. Mary's in a non-conference matchup at the Glenn Warner
Soccer Facility. Mount St. Mary's freshman Alicia
Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made a
season-high 12 saves in the loss for the Mount.
Miller kept the Mount (1-8-0) in the game in the first half, making
seven saves and holding the Midshipmen to just one goal, a 25-yard
shot from Kristen Laraway 17 minutes into the game. Navy held a
13-to-5 advantage in shots in the opening half.
Miller kept up the momentum by denying a Navy penalty kick early in
the second half. Navy (5-2-1) finally broke through when Carissa
Youker made good on a one-versus-one opportunity to extend the lead
to 2-0. Brittany White and Kate Herren then scored 3:35 apart with
just under 21 minutes left in the game to extend the margin to four
goals.
Mount freshmen Lauren
Florio (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) broke the Navy
shutout with 19:07 left in the game with her first collegiate
goal. Florio scored when she deflected a Kim
Karpinski (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) corner
kick into the net. It was Karpinski's team-leading third assist of
the year. White rounded out the scoring in the game with her
second goal of the contest with 7:35 left in the game.
Emily
Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) led the Mount with four
shots while Karpinski added three to give her a team-best 16 shots
on the year. Miller's 12 saves give her a Northeast-Conference
leading 62 saves on the year.
Christine Calderone notched three assists for Navy while Jen
Grijalva added a pair of helpers in the win. Lizzie Barnes and
Beth Reed split the game in goal for Navy. Barnes made four saves
while not allowing a goal with Reed making a pair of saves in the
second half.
Navy held a 25-to-12 advantage in shots
in the game.
Mount St. Mary's will travel to College
Park, Md., on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. game at Maryland.
Game Notes...The win
gives Navy a 9-0 lead in the all-time series with the
Mount...Karpinski leads the Mount with seven points (2g, 3a)...She
did not have a point in each of her first two seasons at the
Mount.
