Emmitsburg, Md. (September 17, 2008)--Mount St.
Mary's erupted for five goals to defeat New Jersey Tech, 5-2, on
Wednesday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. Freshman
Sadie
Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) scored her first two
collegiate goals in the Mount's first win of the season.
New Jersey Tech (1-7) got on the scoreboard first when a Mount
defender knocked the ball in off her shoulder on a corner kick 8:32
into the contest. Just over eight minutes later, the Mount evened
the score when junior Meghamn
Brennan (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic)
tallied her first collegiate goal. Brennan beat NJIT goalkeeper
Sadie Mele with a shot after a nice pass to the middle from
Colleen
Regan (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding).
The Mount (1-7) took its first lead of the season with just under
15 minutes left in the first half on Winship's first goal of the
game. Winship tapped in an easy rebound shot from right in front
of the goal for the score. The play started with a long pass from
freshman Ieva
Kibirkstis (Point Claire, Quebec/Ecole Secondaire Des
Sources) to Emily
Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover), who had her shot turned
away by Mele. Both Kibirkstis and Menotti had assists on the
goal.
Winship opened the second half with another great scoring chance,
but Mele made a nice diving save on a shot to the upper right
corner of the net. The Highlanders then pushed across the
equalizing goal 3:20 into the second half. Erika Taugher put the
ball in off a pass from Emma Vinski after a misplay by Mount
goalkeeper Alicia
Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).
The Mount, however, rattled off three straight goals to seal the
team's first win of the season. Junior Kim
Karpinski (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) broke the
2-2 tie when she buried a shot from 12 yards out after a scramble
in front of the goal. It was Karpinski's second goal of the
season.
The Mount made it 4-2 when Menotti tapped in a cross from freshman
Nicole
Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) with 17:04 left in
the game. Karpinski started the play with a pass to Berge, who
made a nice cross to the middle to Menotti.
The Mount's final goal came when Winship headed a Karpinski pass
into the net with 5:06 left in the contest.
Karpinski finished with a goal and two assists while Menotti added
a goal and an assist in the victory. Miller made eight saves in
the game to increase her Northeast Conference leading total to 50
on the season. Mele made seven saves in the loss for NJIT.
The Mount returns to action on Friday with a 7:00 p.m. game at
Navy.
