Detzel Powers Men's Soccer Past Howard, 5-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) posted two goals and an assist to power Mount St. Mary's past Howard 5-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday.

With the Mount (3-2-0) holding a 1-0 edge, Detzel scored back-to-back goals in the 16th and 21st minutes before completing his career night by assisting Ian Hendrie's (Potomac, Md./St. Andrews Episcopal School) tally in the 48th minute to give the Mountaineers a 4-0 advantage and help the squad to its best start since the 2003 season.

Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) registered a goal and two assists while Hendrie and Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) each notched their first collegiate goal in the match. Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made four saves in the winning effort.

Adisa Bekoe made six saves for the Bison (0-6-1) in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the early advantage and never looked back extend its unbeaten streak against Howard to six games. The two teams ended in a tie in the last four meetings after taking a 2-1 decision on Sept. 7, 2002.

Patrick took a cross from the right off the foot of Phinith for his first career goal at the 14:38 mark. Detzel then found the back of the net unassisted at 15:47 and then scored off a pass from Phinith at 20:14 to hand the Mount a 3-0 advantage going into the intermission.

Detzel helped the Mountaineers' offense get started in the second half when the sophomore and Eric Mullins (Finksburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph) set up Hendrie's first collegiate tally at 48:35. Phinith then sealed the victory when he found the back of the net off a helper by Alex Kem (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) at 68:25.

Phinith and Mullins each dished out their first career assist in the match.

Mount St. Mary's scored five goals in a game for the first time since defeating Saint Francis (Pa.) 5-1 on Oct. 31, 2003. The Mount if off to its best start under head coach Rob Ryerson, matching a 3-2-0 start in 2000 and 2003. The Mountaineers scored three goals in the first half for the second time this season after finding the twine three times against VMI on Aug. 29. The squad has scored 11 goals in its first five games after posting 12 goals during the 2008 season.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday when the team hosts 17-ranked Loyola at Waldron Family Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
