Radford Scores In Closing Minute To Squeak Past Men's Soccer, 1-0

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Radford scored with 53 seconds remaining to break a scoreless tie to take a 1-0 decision against Mount St. Mary's in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday.

Justin Zimmer passed the ball from the left to the center of the field to Shane Butler, who then rocketed a shot that tipped off Mount goalkeeper Chris Davis' (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) fingertips and over his head and into the back of the netting before he could kick the ball out at the 89:03 mark for the decisive score.

Davis made four saves for the Mountaineers (2-2-0) while Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) had a team-high six shots in the loss.

Butler, who made his collegiate debut in the match, notched his first career goal for the Highlanders (3-2-1) while Zimmer registered his second assist on the year. Zach Roszel turned away five shots in the winning effort.

The two teams battled for 89 minutes and looked to be headed for overtime, but Radford ended the scoreless standstill in the closing minute to continue its three-game unbeaten streak against Mount St. Mary's.

Wheeler gave Roszel a tough time, notching four shots the senior goalkeeper had to keep away from the back of the net. Roszel recorded saves off the foot of Wheeler in the 13th,17th, 19th and 58th minutes, including a diving save in the first half and a header off a great pass at the 57:04 mark. Wheeler also missed a header high in the 59th minute.

Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) had the other shot saved by Roszel in the 31st minute. The Radford defense also came up big in support of Roszel, blocking shots from Gary Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) in the 41st minute, Eric Detzel 43rd minute and Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) in the 61st minute. Patrick's blocked shot was the final scoring threat for the Mount.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action at Howard on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
