Arlington, Va. (May 13, 2008)--Senior Josh Vittek belted two home
runs, but it was not enough as George Washington rallied for a
12-11 victory over Mount St. Mary's in a non-conference matchup at
Barcroft Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Mount falls to 14-30 on
the season with the loss.
After George Washington took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first,
the Mount responded with single runs in the second and third to
take a 2-1 advantage. Vittek belted a solo home run to right
center field to even the score in the second while his RBI ground
out gave the Mount a 2-1 lead in the third.
Tom Zebroski's solo home run in the bottom of the third inning tied
the game, but the Mount answered with a five-run fourth for a 7-2
lead. Matt Eiden had a two-run double to start the scoring in the
inning while Tommy Flynn added an RBI ground out. Drew Counselman
followed with a run-scoring single and Ryan Murray added a
sacrifice fly in the inning.
Brendan Kelliher's two-run homer in the bottom of the inning cut
the Mount's lead to 7-4, but the Mount scored four times in the
fifth for a commanding 11-4 advantage. Eiden added an RBI double
before a Flynn sacrifice fly made the score 9-4. Vittek capped the
inning with a two-run blast, giving the Mount a seven-run lead. It
was Vittek's second home run of the game and 15th of the season,
just one shy of matching Jeff Koenig's single-season record of 16
set in 2002.
The Colonials (26-26) scored six times in the bottom of the sixth
to get back in the game. Kelliher had a two-run single and Tim
Reeves added a run-scoring hit to make the score 11-10. George
Washington evened the score with a Sean Rockey RBI double and
Charlie Kruer's single plated the game-winning run in a two-run
seventh.
Vittek finished 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI to pace the
Mount while Eiden went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI.
Kyle Kane added a pair of hits for the Mount.
George Washington had five players with two hits in the game.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday with a 1:00 p.m. game at
NEC rival Quinnipiac. The Mount will clinch the final play off
spot with two wins in the season-ending four-game series at
Quinnipiac.
