Emmitsburg, Md. (May 11, 2008)--Greg DeSantis
belted a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to lift
Long Island to a 7-4 win over Mount St. Mary's at Straw Family
Stadium on campus on Sunday afternoon. Senior Matt Eiden (Silver
Spring, Md./St. John's) led the Mount with three hits in the team's
final home game of the year.
The Blackbirds (16-30, 7-14 NEC) scored single runs in the third,
fifth and seventh innings to take a 3-0 lead. Eric Hinkle belted a
solo home run with two outs in the top of the third to give Long
Island a 1-0 advantage. In the fifth, DeSantis singled to right
field to score James Jones while Hinkle added an RBI single in the
seventh for the Blackbirds.
The Mount (14-29, 10-10 NEC) rallied with four runs in the bottom
of the seventh to take a 4-3 advantage. With one out, Matt Staso
reached on an error. The Mount's next batter, Zach Helman, popped
up to LIU catcher Danny Etkin, who saw the ball pop off his glove
into first baseman Jones' glove for the second out of the inning.
Alex Andrews then walked before Eiden singled up the middle to
plate Staso with the Mount's first run.
Andrews then scored on a wild pitch from Long Island starter Couri
Benz. Shane Eyler followed with a walk and Jones came in to
relieve Benz. Drew Counselman walked to load the bases before Josh
Vittek beat out an infield hit to score Eiden with the game-tying
run. Jones then walked Ryan Murray to force home the go-ahead
run.
Long Island responded with a run in the top of the eighth to tie
the game. Etkin reached on an error to lead off the inning and
Jones followed with an infield single. With one out, DeSantis
drove a Mike Matta pitch off the fence in right field to plate
Etkin with the game-tying run.
In the 10th, Jones singled to center field with one out and Sam
Sciamarelli walked to put two runners on base. DeSantis followed
with his three-run homer to clear the bases and lead the Blackbirds
to the victory.
Eiden finished 3-for-5 with a run scored to pace the Mount offense
on the day. Starting pitcher Max Brittenham allowed three runs in
six innings of work while Matta allowed four runs (three earned) in
four innings of relief.
DeSantis finished 3-for-5 with five RBI while Hinkle added two hits
and two RBI in the victory. Jones was 3-for-5 at the plate with
two runs scored while pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to
earn the victory.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference
matchup at George Washington.
Game Notes: The game
was the final home game of the season for the Mount and the final
home game for seniors Drew Counselman, Joe Diserio, Matt Eiden,
Andrew Germuth, Craig Henson, Ryan Murray and Josh Vittek...Due to
rain, the four-game series was shortened to just one game this
weekend...The Mount remains in fourth-place in the Northeast
Conference standings with a 10-10 league mark...The top four teams
in conference play advance to the NEC Tournament which begins May
22nd in Atlantic City, N.J.
