Long Island Edges Mount St. Mary's, 7-4, in 10 innings

Emmitsburg, Md. (May 11, 2008)--Greg DeSantis belted a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to lift Long Island to a 7-4 win over Mount St. Mary's at Straw Family Stadium on campus on Sunday afternoon. Senior Matt Eiden (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's) led the Mount with three hits in the team's final home game of the year.

The Blackbirds (16-30, 7-14 NEC) scored single runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings to take a 3-0 lead. Eric Hinkle belted a solo home run with two outs in the top of the third to give Long Island a 1-0 advantage. In the fifth, DeSantis singled to right field to score James Jones while Hinkle added an RBI single in the seventh for the Blackbirds.

The Mount (14-29, 10-10 NEC) rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 advantage. With one out, Matt Staso reached on an error. The Mount's next batter, Zach Helman, popped up to LIU catcher Danny Etkin, who saw the ball pop off his glove into first baseman Jones' glove for the second out of the inning. Alex Andrews then walked before Eiden singled up the middle to plate Staso with the Mount's first run.

Andrews then scored on a wild pitch from Long Island starter Couri Benz. Shane Eyler followed with a walk and Jones came in to relieve Benz. Drew Counselman walked to load the bases before Josh Vittek beat out an infield hit to score Eiden with the game-tying run. Jones then walked Ryan Murray to force home the go-ahead run.

Long Island responded with a run in the top of the eighth to tie the game. Etkin reached on an error to lead off the inning and Jones followed with an infield single. With one out, DeSantis drove a Mike Matta pitch off the fence in right field to plate Etkin with the game-tying run.

In the 10th, Jones singled to center field with one out and Sam Sciamarelli walked to put two runners on base. DeSantis followed with his three-run homer to clear the bases and lead the Blackbirds to the victory.

Eiden finished 3-for-5 with a run scored to pace the Mount offense on the day. Starting pitcher Max Brittenham allowed three runs in six innings of work while Matta allowed four runs (three earned) in four innings of relief.
