Teaneck, N.J. (April 6, 2008)--Mount St. Mary's edged Fairleigh
Dickinson, 1-0, in 11 innings in the completion of yesterday's
suspended game. The Knights rebounded to a 4-1 victory in the
originally scheduled game.
The two teams resumed yesterday's game which was suspended due to
darkness with the score tied, 0-0, after 10 innings of play. The
Mount got to work quickly today when Drew Counselman and Josh
Vittek singled to start the 11th inning. After a Matt Staso
sacrifice bunt, Counselman came home on an error by the Fairleigh
Dickinson catcher on Ryan Stamp's fielder's choice.
That was all the Mount needed as Brett Moore escaped a jam in the
bottom of the 11th to pick up the save. Fairleigh Dickinson
started the inning with a Jeff Vincent single and a walk by Brian
Dillon. Vincent moved to third on a fly out to right, and was then
gunned down at the plate when he was caught stealing. Moore then
got a ground out to seal the win.
The star of the game was sophomore Mike Matta, who tossed eight
innings of scoreless relief yesterday to earn the victory. Matta
struck out seven in his eight innings of relief. John O'Hara
allowed the run in the 11th to take the loss for the Knights (5-20,
1-2 NEC).
Vittek led the Mount offense with a 2-for-4 performance at the
plate in the game.
In the nightcap, Fairleigh Dickinson earned a 4-1 victory to
salvage the final game of the series. The fourth game had to be
postponed because of yesterday's suspended contest.
FDU scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a
2-0 lead. Andrew Ahn's RBI double started the scoring while Matt
Maher added a run-producing fielder's choice in the third. Ahn
doubled and scored on a Mount error in the fourth for a 3-0 FDU
advantage before the Mount got on the scoreboard in the fifth.
Matt Staso doubled and came around to score on an Alex Andrews
groundout to cut the deficit to 3-1. FDU added an insurance run in
the eighth for the final margin.
Craig Henson allowed one earned run while striking out five in four
innings of work to take the loss in the game for the Mount. Jimmy
Mudgett allowed one run in four innings of relief, striking out
three. O'Hara struck out eight in five innings to earn the victory
in the second game for FDU. The Knights held the Mount to three
hits in the game.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Monday afternoon when Coppin
State visits for a 4:00 pm game at Straw Family Stadium on
campus.
