Baseball Downs FDU, 7-3, in NEC Opener

Teaneck, N.J. (April 5, 2008)--The Mount St. Mary's baseball team opened Northeast Conference play with a 7-3 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in the first game of a twinbill on Saturday afternoon. The second game has been halted after 10 innings due to darkness with the score tied at 0-0.

In the opening game, the Mount jumped to a 7-0 lead and sophomore Max Brittenham made the lead stand. The Mount jumped to the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Kyle Kane drove home the opening run of the game with a single to center to score Ryan Murray. Eiden followed with a run-scoring double.

The Mount (2-17, 1-0 NEC) took control of the game with three runs in the top of the third. Eiden provided the first two runs with a two-run single and the third run scored when FDU (4-19, 0-1 NEC) threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt.

Vittek blasted a two-run homer in the seventh for a 7-0 Mount lead. Vittek's blast was his 27th career home run, just one shy of Will Vanjonack's school record of 28. The Knights cut into the Mount lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mount closed the door by holding the Knights off the board the rest of the way.

Brittenham struck out four while allowing three runs to earn the victory for the Mount. Eiden was 2-for-5 with three RBI while Vittek and Murray added two hits each in the win.
