Teaneck, N.J. (April 5,
2008)--The Mount St. Mary's baseball
team opened Northeast Conference play with a 7-3 victory over
Fairleigh Dickinson in the first game of a twinbill on Saturday
afternoon. The second game
has been halted after 10 innings due to darkness with the score
tied at 0-0.
In the opening
game, the Mount jumped to a 7-0 lead and sophomore Max Brittenham
made the lead stand. The Mount jumped to the early lead with a
pair of runs in the top of the second. Kyle Kane drove home the
opening run of the game with a single to center to score Ryan
Murray. Eiden followed with a run-scoring double.
The Mount
(2-17, 1-0 NEC) took control of the game with three runs in the top
of the third. Eiden provided the first two runs with a two-run
single and the third run scored when FDU (4-19, 0-1 NEC) threw the
ball away on a pickoff attempt.
Vittek blasted
a two-run homer in the seventh for a 7-0 Mount lead. Vittek's
blast was his 27th career home run, just one shy of Will
Vanjonack's school record of 28. The Knights cut into the Mount
lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mount
closed the door by holding the Knights off the board the rest of
the way.
Brittenham
struck out four while allowing three runs to earn the victory for
the Mount. Eiden was 2-for-5 with three RBI while Vittek and
Murray added two hits each in the win.
