Emmitsburg, Md. (April 27, 2008)--Senior Ryan Murray (Enola,
Pa./East Pennsboro) homered and drove home three runs while
sophomore right hander Mike Matta (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) tossed
a complete game to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 3-2 win over Wagner
at Straw Family Stadium on campus on Sunday afternoon.
The win gives the Mount (12-25, 8-7 NEC)
a split of the four-game series and keeps the team in fourth place
in the Northeast Conference standings with three weeks left in the
season.
Murray opened the scoring in the bottom
of the second when he blasted a solo home run over the right-center
field fence to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage. It was Murray's
sixth home run of the year.
The Mount added to the lead with a
pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Matt Eiden (Silver
Spring, Md./St. John's) singled with one out and moved to second on
a Drew Counselman (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) walk. Senior first
baseman Josh Vittek (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) followed with a base
hit to load the bases. The hit was the 198th in Vittek's career at
the Mount, matching the school's all-time record set by Eric Smith
last year. With the bases
loaded, Murray laced a single to left to plate Eiden and Counselman
to give the Mount a 3-0 advantage.
Wagner (18-21, 9-7) answered with a run
in the top of the fourth. Damian Csakai singled, stole second, and
scored on a Kevin Payne base hit. The Seahawks added another score
in the eighth when Csakai doubled and scored on another Payne base
hit.
In the ninth, Kevin McDonnell drew a
two-out walk, but Matta retired Chris Drecshel on the next at bat
to close out the victory. Matta struck out three and scattered 10
hits to earn the victory and improve to 4-1 on the season. Jack
Rice allowed three runs in three innings to take the loss for
Wagner. Andy Wells tossed five innings of scoreless relief for the
Seahawks.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday
night with a 7:00 p.m. game at No. 21 Virginia.
