Emmitsburg, Md. (April 26, 2008)--Wagner earned a
pair of shutout victories over Mount St. Mary's in Northeast
Conference baseball action at Straw Family Stadium on campus on
Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (18-20, 9-6 NEC) won the opening
game of the twinbill, 5-0, before taking game two by the score of
8-0. The Mount (11-25, 7-7 NEC) managed just six hits in the two
games.
In the opening game, Wagner scored four
times in the top of the third to break open a scoreless game.
Mount St. Mary's starting pitcher Marshall Thomason hit two batters
and walked another to load the bases with one out. Chris
Drechsel's sacrifice fly plated Joe Conforti with the game's first
run. Thomason walked the next batter to load the bases again
before reliever Jimmy Mudgett entered the contest. Jon Lucas
greeted Mudgett with a two-run single and Damian Csakai added a
run-scoring base hit for the 4-0 lead.
That was all Wagner starter Joe Testa
(5-4) would need as he struck out nine while walking none in the
complete-game two-hit shutout. Drecshel added an RBI single in the
seventh to close out the scoring.
Matt Eiden and Drew Counselman had the
only Mount hits. Counselman's hit was a double, his NEC-leading
17th of the year. Mudgett pitched three innings of scoreless
relief for the Mount in the opening game.
In the second game, Wagner scored four
times in the top of the first to take control of the game.
Conforti reached on an error to start things off before Vin Avella
doubled. Seth Boyd followed with an RBI single and Kevin McDonnell
added an RBI grounder for a 2-0 Seahawk advantage. Lucas and Kevin
Payne added RBI base hits in the frame for the 4-0 lead.
Avella belted a solo homer in the second
to make it 5-0. Lucas and Csakai added RBI singles in the fifth
and Avella belted his second homer of the game in the seventh for
the final run of the contest.
Avella finished 3-for-4 with two home
runs, two RBI and three runs scored to pace Wagner in game
two. Lucas and Csakai each had a pair of hits in the game as
well. Freshman catcher Alex Andrews was 2-for-3 at the plate to
pace the Mount.
Matt Watson (4-5) struck out six while
allowing just four hits in the complete game victory for Wagner.
Costa Kapothanasis allowed three runs (one earned) with seven
strikeouts in four innings out of the Mount bullpen.
The teams conclude the four-game series
tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game at Straw Family Stadium on
campus.
