Bridgeport, Conn. (April 19, 2008)--Solid pitching
from Brett Moore and Mike Matta and Shane Eyler's 3-for-4
performance at the plate lifted Mount St. Mary's (10-22, 6-4 NEC)
to a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart in the second game of a doubleheader
at Harbor Yard on Saturday afternoon. Sacred Heart took the
opening game, 5-1.
In the second game, Eyler went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to pace
the Mount offense. Moore (1-5) allowed two runs (one earned) in
six innings to earn the victory while Matta pitched a scoreless
seventh for his first save of the season.
In the top of the first of the second game, Eyler led off with a
single, moved to second on a Matt Eiden sacrifice. Drew Counselman
followed with an infield single to put runners on first and third.
Josh Vittek was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Eyler scored
on a Ryan Murray fielder's choice. In the second, Zach Helman,
Eyler and Eiden strung together three straight singles to give the
Mount a 2-0 lead.
Sacred Heart's Mike Drowne doubled and scored on a J.J. Edwards
single in the third to cut the Mount lead to 2-1, but the Mount
answered in the fifth when Eyler doubled, moved to third on another
Eiden sacrifice, and scored on a Counselman sacrifice fly. Phil
Tantillo's sacrificie fly in the bottom of the fifth gave Sacred
Heart (5-29, 3-7 NEC) an unearned run to cu the gap to 3-2, but the
Mount held on for the victory.
In the opening game, Sacred Heart's Jack Wagoner limited Mount St.
Mary's to three hits to propel his team to a 5-1 win. After
scoring a season-high 23 runs yesterday, the Mount managed a Josh
Vittek double and singles by Ryan Murray and Drew Counselman off
Wagoner. Sacred Heart jumped on top with three runs in the bottom
of the first inning. The first two batters singed to start the
inning the first run scored on a Mount error. Paul Schmidt and
Chris Whittemore added RBI singles for a 3-0 advantage. The
Pioneers made it 4-0 on a Phil Tantillo sacrifice fly in the
second.
Two Sacred Heart errors led to the Mount's lone run of the game in
the top of the fourth. Murray was credited with an RBI when the
Sacred Heart shortstop made an error on his grounder.
The teams complete the four-game series tomorrow morning with an
11:00 am game at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.
