Costa Kapothanasis Tosses Three-Hit Shutout to Lead Mount Past Maryland-Eastern Shore, 10-0

Emmitsburg, Md.(April 15, 2008)--Sophomore right hander Costa Kapothanasis tossed a three-hit shutout to pace Mount St. Mary's (8-21) past Maryland-Eastern Shore at Straw Family Stadium on campus. Freshman Kyle Kane added a pair of doubles to lead the Mount offense in the game.

Kapothanasis allowed just three hits while striking out eight in his complete-game victory to improve to 1-1 on the year. Maryland-Eastern Shore (5-29) only had one runner reach third base in the game.

The Mount took the lead in the bottom of the second when Kane doubled to right center field to score Ryan Murray, who walked with one out. The Mount added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take control of the game. Senior first baseman Josh Vittek belted his Northeast Conference-leading eighth home run, a two-run bomb over the right field fence, to give the Mount a 3-0 advantage. Kane doubled with one out and later scored on a UMES error for a 4-0 lead.

The Mount added three runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win. In the sixth, Alex Andrews doubled down the left field line to plate Joe Kavanagh. Drew Counselman and Shane Eyler added an RBI singles as well in the frame. In the seventh, Eyler had a two-run base hit while the final run scored on an error.

Eyler went 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI for the Mount while Kane was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Counselman also added two hits in the contest while Andrews had two runs scored in addition to his RBI double.

Jorge Pichardo, Tyler Love and Russel Deutschmann each had a hit for UMES.

The Mount returns to action on Friday, April 18, when they travel to Northeast Conference rival Sacred Heart in the first of a four-game conference series.
