Central Connecticut Downs Mount Baseball, 12-3

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 13, 2008)--Mount St. Mary's lost to Central Connecticut State, 12-3, in the final game of a four-game series at Straw Family Stadium on campus. Ryan Murray went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI to pace the Mount (6-21, 4-3 NEC). The two teams split the four-game set.

Central Connecticut State (11-13, 6-2 NEC) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on sacrifice flies from Anthony Scialdone and Casey Walko. The Mount responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Zach Helman walked and Drew Counselman doubled to put runners at second and third. After Josh Vittek walked, Murray laced a single up the middle to even the score. CCSU pitcher John Tesseyman, however, got out of the jam by getting a double play.

The Blue Devils took control of the game with a seven-run third inning, taking advantage of four walks, a hit batsman, and timely hitting. Jak Kidd's RBI single up the middle scored Scialdone, who walked to open the inning, for a 3-2 lead. Two more walks loaded the bases and Pat Epps responded with a two-run single for a three-run lead. Sean Miller-Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, and Sean Allaire followed wth a walk to force home a run. Scialdone then broke the game open with a bases-clearing double to give CCSU a 9-2 lead.

Miller-Jones belted a solo home run in the fifth and Allair tripled home a run and scored on a Scialdone ground out for a 12-2 CCSU lead. The Mount closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth when Counselman doubled and later scored on a Central Connecticut error.

Mike Matta allowed three runs in 5.1 innings of relief for the Mount, striking out four and walking none. Counselman finished with a pair of doubles and two runs scored while Murray was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Kyle Kane added a pair of hits in the loss.

Scialdone drove in five runs for the Blue Devils while Miller-Jones went 2-for-3 with four runs scored. Allair added two hits and three runs scored as the top three hitters in the Blue Devil lineup combined to go 5-for-10 at the plate with eight runs scored and eight RBI.

The Mount returns to action tomorrow with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Coppin State at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
