Emmitsburg, Md. (March 26,
2008)--Georgetown scored 23 runs on 23 hits to cruise to a
23-3 win over Mount St. Mary's in a non-conference matchup at Straw
Family Stadium on campus on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Kyle
Kane went 3-for-5 at the plate to pace the Mount offense.
The Hoyas (8-12) struck first with four
runs in the top of the first inning. Dan Capeless started the
scoring with an RBI single while Erick Fernandez added a sacrifice
fly in the inning. The other two runs scored on Mount errors.
Matt Ianetta and Sean Lamont belted
back-to-back solo homers to start the third inning for a 6-0
Georgetown. Ianetta added an RBI single and Lamont a two-run single
in the fourth for a 9-0 advantage before the Mount broke on the
scoreboard.
Ryan Murray, Zach Helman and Kane laced
singles to start the bottom of the fourth with Murray scoring on
Kane's base hit. With one out, Matt Eiden walked to load the bases
and Matt Staso followed with a two-out single to plate Helman to
cut the deficit to 9-2. Drew Counselman followed with a long fly
to left that was corralled by the Hoyas to end the rally.
Georgetown sealed the win with six runs
in the top of the fifth. Matt Harrigan had an RBI single and Greg
Pustizzi a two-run base hit for the Hoyas. Chip Malt followed with
a two-run homer and Tommy Lee added a solo shot, giving the Hoyas
back-to-back homers for the second time in the game. Kane had an
RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to make the score
15-to-3.
Sean Baumann added a pair of home runs
later in the game for Georgetown, the second a grand slam that gave
the Hoyas a 22-3 advantage.
Kane finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI
for the Mount while Josh Vittek went 2-for-4 with a double. Lamont
was 4-for-6 with three RBI while Malt added three hits and three
runs scored for Georgetown. Baumann finished the game 2-for-2 with
two home runs and six RBI.
Jimmy Saris (2-2) allowed three runs in
five innings to earn the win for Georgetown. Craig Henson pitched
a scoreless inning of relief for the Mount.
