Catonsville, Md. (March 25, 2008)--UMBC defeated Mount St.
Mary's, 9-5, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon. The
Mount's Drew Counselman went 3-for-5 with a triple to pace the
Mount (1-16) in the loss. Eddie Bach allowed four runs in seven
innings to earn the win for the Retrievers (6-9).
Bryan Russo's RBI single through the right side gave the
Retrievers an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Mount evened the score in the top of the first when Ryan Murray
scored on a UMBC error to knot the game at 1-1. The Retrievers,
however, answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to
take a 4-1 advantage. UMBC scored runs on an error, an infield
single and a sacrifice fly in the inning.
UMBC took control of the game with three more runs in the bottom
of the fifth. Russo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to
start the scoring while Steve Russo added a two-run single for a
7-1 Retriever lead. Tom Meaney's RBI single in the sixth pushed
the margin to 8-1 before the Mount got back in the game with a
three-run seventh.
With two outs, Joe Kavanagh and Matt Staso singled to start the
rally. Counselman followed with a run-scoring single before
cleanup hitter Josh Vittek plated two more runs with a single to
center. The Mount cut into the lead again when Shane Eyler belted
a solo home run in the top of the eight, but UMBC's Meaney answered
with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the inning to complete
the scoring.
Counselman led the Mount with his three hits while Staso
finished 2-for-5. Max Brittenham (0-4) allowed seven runs (six
earned) in five innings to take the loss. Kent Worthington allowed
two runs in three innings of relief for the Mount. Five UMBC
players had two hits apiece to lead the Retriever offense while
Steve Russo knocked in four runs in the contest.
The Mount returns to action tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. home game
against Georgetown at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
