West Palm Beach, Fla. (February 29, 2008)--The
Mount St. Mary's baseball team dropped a pair of game in Florida on
Friday, falling to Mercyhurst, 6-3, in the afternoon at to Boston
College, 7-3, at night. The Mount drops to 0-5 on their
season-opening Florida trip.
Mercyhurst jumped to a 4-0 lead en route to the 6-3 victory over
the Mount. John Blike's three-run home with two outs in the top of
the first inning provided a big boost to the Laker offense (6-3).
Mercyhurst added a Scott Monzel RBI single in the second to make
the score 4-0.
The Mount broke on the scoreboard when Josh Vittek's ground out
plated Tommy Flynn, who had singled and moved to third on a Drew
Counselman double. Mercyhurst, however, scored a pair of runson an
Adam Gray two-run double in the eighth to take a 6-1 lead.
The Mount hung tough, cutting the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of
the eighth on a Matt Staso RBI groundout. The Mount rallied in the
ninth when Vittek and Ryan Murray opened the inning with
back-to-back singles. Vittek scored on a wild pitch, but
Mercyhurst was able to shut the door after that.
Counselman was 3-for-4 at the plate in the game with a dobule and a
triple. Starter Marshall Thomason allowed six runs while striking
out seven in 7.1 innings of work.
In the nightcap vs. Boston College, Counselman blasted a solo home
run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. Boston College (3-1)
answered with a E. Campbell home run in the bottom of the second.
The Eagles took the lead on M. Hamlet's two-run single in the
bottom of the fourth and took control of the game with a four-run
seventh inning.
The Mount scored twice in the ninth to make the score 7-3. Bobby
Plumb and Joe Diserio each had RBI singles in the inning. Plumb
and Diserio each finished with two hits in the ballgame. Mount
starter Craig Henson struck out nine while allowing five run in six
innings of work.
