Detzel Powers Men's Soccer Past St. Francis (N.Y.), 2-0

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) registered a goal and an assist to lift Mount St. Mary's past St. Francis (N.Y.) 2-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.

Detzel set up the Mount's (8-6-0, 4-1-0 NEC) first goal of the afternoon in the 20th minute and then sealed the victory with a tally of his own two minutes and eight seconds later. The sophomore ranks second on the team with six goals and six assists for 18 points.

Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) recorded his second goal of the season and Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) dished out an assist on Detzel's marker. Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) posted two saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year in the winning effort.

Chris Antonino turned away two shots for the Terriers (11-3-1, 4-2-0 NEC) in the loss.

In its second-straight battle against the first-place team in the league, Mount St. Mary's scored two goals in the first 22 minutes of the match and never looked back to hand St. Francis (N.Y.) its first loss at home this season. The Terriers came into the contest 6-0 at the Aviator Sports and Recreation Complex.

Fenstermacher headed in the first goal of the day off a free kick from Detzel at 19:43 to hand the Mount a 1-0 advantage. Detzel then found the bottom left corner of the net off a pass from Wheeler at 21:51 to increase the margin to two goals.

St. Francis (N.Y.) had a couple chances to get on the scoreboard, but could not convert. Semso Nikocevic had his shot blocked by the Mountaineers defense at 16:21. Pontus Werner shot was saved by Davis at 34:53 before Giuseppe Buscemi gave the Terriers their final scoring chance, but Davis turned away the shot at 88:10 to preserve the shutout.

The eight wins are the most wins since the 2003 season when the squad was 8-7-2 and the best 14-game start since 2000 when the Mount was 9-4-1.

The Mountaineers has two players with 18 points or more for the first time since the 1997 when Simon Hodkin (34 points), Mark Southern (22 points) and Duncan Gladwin (21 points) each had at least 18 points. Along with Detzel's 18 points, Wheeler has 10 goals and two assists for 22 points.

Mount St. Mary's will play its third-straight game against the league's top team at home on Friday against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights will enter the game 9-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in NEC play with 13 points while the Mount and the Terriers are in second place with 12 points. Game time is 3 p.m.
