Patrick Heads Men's Soccer To 2-0 NEC Start With 1-0 Win Against Saint Francis (Pa.)

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Freshman Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) headed in the game-winner in the 66th minute to lift Mount St. Mary's past Saint Francis (Pa.) 1-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.

Eric Mullins (Finksburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph) tabbed the ball to Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder), who pushed the ball ahead to Patrick and the freshman headed the ball into the back of the left netting for his third goal of the season and help the Mount (6-5-0, 2-0-0 NEC) open the league slate with two wins for the first time since the 2005 season.

Chris Davis made four saves in the second half to earn his third-straight shutout and fifth of the season in the winning effort.

Brad Williams made four saves for the Red Flash (3-7-1, 0-2-0 NEC) and Patrick Fleming recorded three shots in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's broke a scoreless standstill in the second half and held on to knock off Saint Francis (Pa.) to end a four-game losing streak against the Red Flash.

Saint Francis (Pa.) did not record a shot after the Mountaineers took the lead, but missed several scoring chances in the game. The Red Flash's best chance to score in the first half came when Fleming had a shot blocked in the stomach by Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) in the 35th minute. Saint Francis (Pa.) also had a barrage of shots turned away by Davis in a span of 30 seconds in the 61st minute. Tyler Hibbs, Owen Gombami and Fleming each had scoring chances turned away by three diving saves.

With its six wins, the Mount has posted its most victories since the team went 8-7-2 in 2003 and the most wins through 11 games since a 7-3-1 start in 2000.

Davis notches three-straight shutouts for the first time in his career and marks the first time the Mountaineers accomplished the feat since the start of the 2006 season against Howard, Pittsburgh and St. Joseph.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday when the team hosts Monmouth. Game time is 1 p.m.
