EMMITSBURG,
Md. Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) notched his
first collegiate goal and Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg,
Md./Magruder) dished out two assists to help Mount St. Mary's past
Navy 3-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday.
Fenstermacher,
who registered an assist in his freshman campaign, recorded his
first career goal in the sixth minute to hand the Mount (4-5-0) a
1-0 advantage. Phinith assisted Fenstermacher's tally and added an
assist in the second half for his second two-assist match this
season.
Chris
Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) notched his
team-leading fifth goal of the year while Kyle Patrick (Hershey,
Pa./Hershey) found the twine for the second time in 2008. Chris
Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made two saves to earn
his third shutout of the season.
Nolan
Grebb turned away seven shots for the Midshipmen (4-5-1) in the
loss.
Mount St.
Mary's jumped out to the early advantage and never looked back to
defeat Navy for the first time in eight tries since the series
started in 1988.
Phinith
served the ball from the right before Fenstermacher rocketed a shot
into the bottom left corner at the 5:30 mark to hand the Mount an
early 1-0 advantage.
Wheeler
then found the twine for the third-straight match off Eric Detzel's
(York, Pa./Central York) fourth assist of the year at 32:40 to give
the Mountaineers a two-goal advantage going into
halftime.
Phinith
then capped the squad's first-ever win against the Midshipmen when
he set up Patrick's tally at 67:42 for a 3-0 lead.
Navy had
a couple of chances to get on the scoreboard, but could not
convert. Davis turned away shots from Mark Garcia and Kyle
Behbehani in the 10th and 50th minutes, respectively, before Matt
Tapajcik gave the Midshipmen its final scoring threat and missed
wide in the 86th minute.
It marked
the first time the Mountaineers have shutout Navy and the first
time Mount St. Mary's scored more than one goal against the
Annapolis program.
The four
non-conference wins in 2008 are the most since the squad won four
non-conference matches in 2000.
The Mount
returns to action when the squad opens up Northeast Conference play
at home against Robert Morris on Oct. 10. Game time is 3
p.m.
