Penn scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the
Mount, 4-3, in a non-conference matchup in Florida. The Mount had
rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the
ninth.
Trailing 3-0, the Mount rallied to tie the game in the top of
the ninth. In the final frame, Ryan Murray led off with a single
and Matt Eiden followed with a two-base hit. Drew Counselman then
laced a single to drive home Murray and put runners on first and
third with no outs. Mike Gioioso followed with an RBI base hit,
cutting the Mount deficit to 3-2. After an Ivor Hodgson sacrifice
put runners on second and third with one out, Matt Staso pinch hit
and dropped a suicide squeeze to plate Counselman with the tying
run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Penn loaded the bases on freshman
Mike Matta and drove home the winning run on a single with one
out.
Starting pitcher Dustin Pease had his best outing of the spring,
striking out nine while allowing three runs in eight innings.
Eiden finished 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the offens.e
