Emmitsburg, Md. (March 27, 2007)--Navy defeated
Mount St. Mary's, 16-3, in non-conference baseball action at the
Mount's Straw Family Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Mount's Ryan
Murray went 2-for-4 with his Northeast Conference leading fifth
home run of the season in the loss.
The Midshipmen (18-9) broke the game open early, jumping to a
7-0 lead after three innings of play. Michael Hoosier's RBI single
in the first opened the scoring. Navy then scored four unearned
runs in the second for a 5-0 advantage. Renaldo Hollins had an RBI
double and Michael Speciale a two-run double in the inning.
Navy stretched its lead to 10-0 before the Mount (8-12) got on
the scoreboard. In the bottom of the fifth, Murray singled up the
middle to drive in Ivor Hodgson and Mike
Gioioso. Murray added a solo home run to center field in the
bottom of the eight, giving him five long balls on the season.
Murray leads the Northeast Conference in both batting average and
home runs.
Navy, which entered the game with four home runs on the season,
belted five homers on the day. Thomas Hamilton, Drew Lydon,
Kendall Bolt, Jack Ferrick and Jonathan Berkowitz each connected
for their first home runs of the season for the Midshipmen.
Hodgson went 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in the loss
while Murray finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.
Mount starter Andrew Germuth allowed seven
runs, two earned, in 2.2 innings to fall to 3-4 on the season.
Lydon went 3-for-4 to pace Navy while Speciale, Bill Maugeri,
Hoosier, Hamilton and Bolt each had two hits in the game. Mark
Foris picked up the win with 2.1 innings of relief while Daniel
Kovalcik pitched the final three innings for the save.
The Mount returns to action tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m.
doubleheader against Maryland-Eastern Shore at Straw Family
Stadium.
