Senior pitcher Dustin Pease once again had a strong start to
lead Mount St. Mary's to a 5-4 win at George Mason on Tuesday
afternoon. Pease allowed three runs in eight and two-thirds
innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Pease pitched a
complete-game win over Mason in 2004, struck out five in two
innings in 2005 and took a shutout into the sixth on Tuesday before
finishing with three earned runs allowed with one walk and five
strikeouts. Pease surrendered 13 hits but pitched out of four
bases-loaded jams, allowing just one run, in those jams.
The Mount jumped to a
4-0 lead with single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth
innings. In the second, Matt Eiden's single plated Ryan Murray
with the game's first run. In the fourth, Mike Gioioso's squeeze
bunt scored Eiden to give the Mount a 2-0 advantage. The Mount's
run in the fifth came on a double play while Eric Smith's sacrifice
fly in the sixth gave the Mount its 4-0 advantage.
After a Jason Bour RBI
single got George Mason (7-7) on the scoreboard, Murray scored on a
wild pitch in the top of the seventh to give the Mount a 5-1
advantage. Brent Weiss added an RBI single in the bottom of the
seventh for the Patriots to cut the Mount's lead to
5-2.
George Mason rallied
with a pair of runs in the ninth, but came up short. Mark Hill led off
with a single but he was erased when Dan Palumbo reached on a
fielder's choice. Weiss' single put runners on the corners and
Chris Fournier's bloop into shallow center made it 5-3 with runners
on first and second. Scott Krieger then singled to load the bases.
Justin Bour then grounded back to the pitcher but a throwing error
by the catcher in an attempt to complete a 1-2-3 double play kept
the inning alive and made it 5-4. But Josh Steinberg, batting for
the first time after replacing Jason Bour who left the game after
being hit by a pitch in the eighth, flew out to left to end the
game.
Murray went 4-for-5
with two runs scored to pace the Mount offense while Eiden finished
the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Costa Kapothanasis came on to get
the final out in relief of Pease to earn his first collegiate
save.
The Mount returns to
action tomorrow at Navy.
