The Mount St. Mary's baseball team split a pair of games played
at Davidson on Saturday. The Mount (2-5) edged Radford, 10-9, in
13 innings to take the first game before falling to host Davidson,
16-8, in the nightcap. Sophomore Ivor Hodgson went 4-9 with a home
run in the two games.
Against Radford, t he Mount rallied from a 7-5 deficit with
single runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to force
extra innings. In the eighth, Ryan Murray cracked a solo home run,
his second of the season, to cut the deficit to 7-6. The Mount
tied the score in the ninth on Eric Smith's solo shot to center
field.
Radford scored twice in the 10th to grab a 9-7 lead, but the
Mount rallied once again, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half
of the inning to tie the score. Hodgson's RBI single scored Drew
Counselman to cut the deficit to 9-8, and Matt Staso then scored on
a wild pitch to tie the score.
In the bottom of the 13th, Smith singeld to left to start the
inning and stole second base. He advanced to third on a Stephan
Fay fly out, and scored on Counselman's walk-off single.
The Mount took an early 3-0 lead in the game with an unearned
run in the first and a two-run double by Justus Yocum in the
second. Another unearned run in the fourth gave the Mount a 4-0
advantage, but Radford scored the next seven runs to take a 7-4
lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Smith finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI
while Murray, Hodgson and Matt Eiden each had three hits in the
win. Freshman Mike Matta pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief
to earn his first collegiate victory.
In the second game, the Mount was downed by Davidson, 16-8. The
Mount took a 2-0 lead in the second when Counselman scored on a
wild pitch and Joe Diserio added a run-scoring single. The
Wildcats (5-0) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
inning before the Mount regained the lead in the fourth when Matt
Trusch scored on a passed ball. Davidson, however, scored four
times in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 9-3
lead.
The Mount rallied again, scoring four times in the sixth to cut
the deficit to 9-7. Trusch scored on a wild pitch, Fay had an RBI
single, and Smith an RBI single in the rally. Davidson, however,
answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the
win.
Diserio finished 3-for-3 with a runs scored while Hodgson added
solo home run and two runs scored in the loss.
The Mount will play Ohio tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
